Marina Mabrey scored a career-high 37 points and tied the WNBA single-game record with nine 3-pointers as Toronto rallied from 16 down to beat Connecticut 101-97.
Marina Mabrey scored 21 of her 37 points in the fourth quarter, and the Toronto Tempo erased a 16-point deficit to beat the Connecticut Sun 101-97 on Friday night.
Mabrey set a career high with 37 points and tied the WNBA single-game record with nine 3-pointers on 12 attempts. She finished 14-of-24 overall with four rebounds and four assists against the team she previously played for. Mabrey scored 11 points in the first quarter, then did not score again until the fourth.
Toronto (8-8) trailed 50-37 at halftime and by as many as 16 in the second quarter. The expansion Tempo scored 64 points after halftime to Connecticut's 47 and made 19 3-pointers, the most by any team this season and tied for the second-most in a regular-season game in WNBA history. Toronto shot 48.7% from the field, went 19-of-34 from deep, and had 27 assists on 37 baskets.
The Tempo were down 79-64 early in the fourth quarter. Mabrey made four 3-pointers in the period to bring Toronto back. She put the Tempo ahead 89-88 on a driving layup with 3:45 left, their first lead of the second half. Brittney Griner put the Sun back in front with a layup. Mabrey scored again to retake the lead, and the teams traded it before her 3-pointer with 1:03 to play made it 97-93. María Conde made four free throws in the final 18 seconds.
Temi Fágbénlé set a career high with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds, one short of what would have been the franchise's first double-double. Conde matched a career best with 19 points off the bench and six rebounds, making five 3-pointers without a turnover. Isabelle Harrison scored 15 points with six rebounds and five assists. Julie Allemand had a season-high nine assists.
Connecticut scored 54 points in the paint to Toronto's 32 but made just 6 of 22 from 3-point range. Griner and Leila Lacan scored 16 apiece for the Sun (2-15), who have lost seven straight. Kennedy Burke led the reserves with 18, Olivia Nelson-Ododa added 13, and Aneesah Morrow grabbed 10 rebounds. The Sun made 21 of 26 free throws.
The Sun led 24-20 after the first quarter and outscored Toronto 26-17 in the second. They led 74-64 through three quarters before Toronto outscored them 37-23 in the fourth. There were eight lead changes and two ties.
Toronto visits the Atlanta Dream on Monday. Connecticut hosts the Chicago Sky on Monday.
