Talks on a potential New York trade for Connecticut forward Aneesah Morrow have cooled off ahead of Sunday's WNBA trade deadline, Madeline Kenney of the New York Post reported Thursday, citing multiple sources.
Over the previous several weeks, New York checked in on Morrow among other players multiple times, Kenney reported from Las Vegas. New York is backing away from the table on Morrow, Kenney reported.
The trade window closes at 3 p.m. ET Sunday.
Earlier in the week, The Athletic's Annie Costabile reported that trade conversations around New York guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton had picked back up, with Connecticut among the teams that checked in. One construction Costabile raised sent Morrow to New York for Laney-Hamilton. Morrow had come up in trade talks this season, multiple sources told Costabile.
Connecticut is 7-20 and last in the Eastern Conference. The franchise has $800,769 in cap space. The team relocates to Houston in 2027.
Morrow is averaging 11.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 22.8 minutes across 19 games this season, eight of them starts. She is shooting 40.7% from the field and 28.1% from three-point range. She has missed nine games, six of those for personal reasons and the reconditioning that followed. She returned to the starting lineup in Connecticut's 123-88 loss at Indiana and finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block in 21 minutes.
Last season, Morrow started 23 of 41 games and averaged 7.7 points and 6.9 rebounds. She shot 37.5% from the field. Connecticut took her seventh overall in the 2025 draft out of LSU, where she played two seasons after two at DePaul. She is signed through 2027 with a club option for 2028.
New York holds $129,904 in cap room before initiating a trade. Laney-Hamilton is on a $400,000 protected veteran contract and becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season. At 32, she has appeared in 17 of New York's 28 games with five starts and is averaging 4.7 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 16.8 minutes. She last played July 12 at Toronto. She has not been listed on the injury report since.
Through 2023 and 2024, Laney-Hamilton averaged 30 minutes per game for New York. She averaged 11.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists during the 2024 title season. A meniscus tear cost her the 2025 season.
New York beat Los Angeles 113-109 on Tuesday. The Liberty are 16-12 and seventh in the standings. Leonie Fiebich has missed time with an injury to her left foot. Satou Sabally remained in concussion protocol as of Tuesday.
New York plays at Las Vegas on Thursday at 10 p.m. ET and at Phoenix on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. The next game after the deadline is Monday at home against Seattle.
