Phoenix held trade talks involving Alyssa Thomas earlier this season, league sources told The Athletic. Those conversations have since gone cold.

There were trade talks including Alyssa Thomas during the Phoenix Mercury's losing streaks earlier this season, multiple league sources told The Athletic's Annie Costabile. Those conversations have since gone cold.

Thomas has averaged 14.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in 26 games this season. She has added 1.5 steals in 33.6 minutes per game.

Phoenix is 10-18 and 12th in the standings, five games behind the Washington Mystics for the eighth and final playoff spot coming out of the All-Star break. The Mercury reached the finals in 2025. The WNBA trade deadline falls Sunday, Aug. 2.

General manager Nick U'Ren acquired Thomas and Satou Sabally through a four-team trade in 2025. Phoenix opted not to core Sabally this offseason, and she signed with the New York Liberty as an unrestricted free agent.

Thomas spent the first 11 seasons of her career with the Connecticut Sun. In her first season in Phoenix, she averaged 15.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, and a league-leading 9.2 assists in 39 games while shooting 53.2% from the field.

She is a six-time All-Star, a four-time All-WNBA selection, and a seven-time All-Defensive Team selection. She has been named an MVP finalist four times. Thomas is the league's all-time leader in regular-season triple-doubles.

On July 22, Thomas recorded the 20th regular-season triple-double of her career in an 86-82 win over the Los Angeles Sparks. Counting the playoffs, it was the 26th of her career. Phoenix closed the first half of the season with back-to-back wins.

Thomas is 34 and in her 13th season. She played at Maryland.

Alanna Smith could be a target for U'Ren and the Mercury before Sunday, Costabile reported. The reigning co-Defensive Player of the Year signed a three-year max deal with the Dallas Wings valued at roughly $3.75 million, and she has averaged 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game off the bench.

Phoenix has $857,740 in cap space remaining this season, which means the Mercury would have to send salary back to Dallas or otherwise clear room, Costabile reported.

Kahleah Copper leads Phoenix in scoring, and Thomas leads the Mercury in assists. Phoenix ranks 10th in the league in offensive rating at 105.3 and 12th in defensive rating at 108.9.

The Mercury beat the Toronto Tempo 89-80 on June 27 in a game Thomas missed.

Phoenix hosts the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET at Mortgage Matchup Center.
