Sky Suspend Angel Reese for 'Detrimental' Comments Ahead of Aces Matchup cover image

Angel Reese will sit out the first half against the Aces after critical remarks, adding to a turbulent finish for the Chicago Sky’s season.

Angel Reese’s strong season has not kept her out of headlines, and now the Chicago Sky have disciplined their leading scorer and rebounder. The team announced Friday that Reese will be held out of the first half of Sunday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Aces, citing “statements detrimental to the team.”

A two-time All-Star, Reese leads the WNBA in rebounding at 12.6 per game and owns a league-best 23 double-doubles, along with team highs in scoring (14.7) and assists (3.7). But her frustration with Chicago’s 10-31 record spilled into the public this week.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Reese made it clear she expects major changes this offseason.

“I’m not settling for the same [expletive] we did this year,” Reese said. “We [have] to get great players this offseason or else I might consider moving on from it.”

She also pointed to uncertainty at the point guard position.

“We can’t rely on Courtney [Vandersloot] to come back [from her ACL tear] at the age that she’s at," Reese said. "I know she’ll be a great asset for us, but we can’t rely on that. We need someone, probably a little younger with some experience, somebody who’s been playing the game and is willing to compete for a championship and has done it before.”

After those remarks circulated, Reese said Wednesday that she apologized to her teammates. “I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates, because they’ve been through this with me throughout,” she said.

The Sky moved quickly to impose discipline.

“The Chicago Sky values the safety, respect, and well-being of every player,” the team said in a statement. “We are committed to accountability so our players can stay focused on playing basketball. This matter has been handled and resolved internally, and we are moving forward as a team.”

Head coach Tyler Marsh stressed that the decision came from above.

“It’s an organizational decision,” Marsh said before Friday’s 97-77 loss to the Indiana Fever. “Just going to handle it internally, and that’s kind of what it’s been.”

The controversy comes just as Reese finished serving a separate suspension for technical fouls. She sat out Wednesday’s win over the Connecticut Sun after picking up her eighth technical of the season, which, by league rule, triggers an automatic one-game ban. That penalty stemmed from a play in which she struck Connecticut’s Aaliyah Edwards while battling for a rebound.

Marsh said he has spoken with Reese about both issues but offered no details.

“The matter has been resolved, and we’d just like to focus on tonight,” he said.

Chicago has already been eliminated from playoff contention, but Reese’s production has been a bright spot in a season otherwise defined by struggles.
