Marina Mabrey scored 18 and Kiki Rice added 17 as the Toronto Tempo beat the Seattle Storm 93-72 on Saturday, hitting a WNBA-record 31 straight free throws.
Marina Mabrey scored 18 points, Kiki Rice scored 13 of her 17 after halftime and the Toronto Tempo beat the Seattle Storm 93-72 on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 8,210.
Rice, a rookie guard, had four points at the break before taking over in the second half. She went 9 of 9 from the foul line and added four steals, a season high, for the Tempo (5-4).
Toronto made its first 31 free throws, a WNBA record, before Teonni Key missed two in a row with 58 seconds left. The Tempo finished 31 of 33, or 94%. Seattle shot eight free throws all night and made seven.
The game stayed close into the third quarter. Seattle led 36-37 at halftime after a 23-point second quarter, and Katie Lou Samuelson's turnaround jumper tied it at 51 with 3:50 to go in the third. The Storm then turned the ball over on three straight possessions, and Toronto answered with a 19-5 run to pull away. The Tempo outscored Seattle 33-20 in the period and led by as many as 25.
There were five lead changes and four ties, but none after Toronto's third-quarter push. The Tempo got to the rim and got loose in transition, scoring 17 fast-break points to Seattle's four.
Brittney Sykes had 15 points against the team she played for last season. She made all seven of her free throws but shot 4 of 12 from the field and was called for a technical foul in the third quarter. Rookie Laura Juškaitė added 14 points and made four 3-pointers, a career high. Maria Conde, also a rookie, had 13 off the bench for her second straight game in double figures. Nyara Sabally finished with eight points and four rebounds, and Julie Allemand handed out four assists.
Natisha Hiedeman led Seattle with 18 points and seven assists. Jordan Horston added 15, a season high, and Mackenzie Holmes grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.
The Storm made 7 of 27 from 3-point range, or 26%. They are 3-0 this season when they shoot 38% or better from behind the arc and 0-6 when they shoot 37% or worse.
Dominique Malonga missed her sixth straight game for Seattle while in concussion protocol.
Toronto also beat the Storm 86-73 on May 13, the first win in franchise history.
The Storm (3-6) play at Dallas on Monday. The Tempo visit New York on Wednesday.
