The Chicago Sky enter the offseason with one of their most pressing questions centering not on roster moves, but on whether two of their most important players can move forward together.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Angel Reese’s relationship with Courtney Vandersloot has become a key issue for the franchise after tensions surfaced in the final weeks of the season. Reese’s public questioning of whether the Sky could count on Vandersloot to return from a torn ACL struck a nerve inside the locker room, and the Tribune reported that Vandersloot was considered “the player most upset” by those comments.
Multiple organizational sources told the Tribune there is concern about whether Reese and Vandersloot can repair their relationship. The matter looms large as the Sky work to stabilize a team that finished 10-34 but still views Reese and Kamilla Cardoso as building blocks for the future.
General manager Jeff Pagliocca made clear the team continues to value Vandersloot’s leadership at the point guard position.
“If she’s healthy, she’s going to be playing basketball here,” Pagliocca said.
The Sky’s front office remains committed to a vision that features Vandersloot anchoring the backcourt while Reese leads the frontcourt. The dynamic between the two could be decisive in whether that vision can take hold.
Vandersloot, 36, did not participate in the team’s exit interviews last week but is expected to speak with the media in the coming days. Reese, who averaged 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists this season while earning a second consecutive All-Star selection, is also scheduled for an offseason media session. The Tribune noted that how she addresses questions about her teammates could help repair trust — or prolong speculation about her long-term future in Chicago.
The Tribune added that while Reese’s frustrations with roster construction and facilities have been voiced publicly, she has never explicitly requested a trade. Internally, the Sky remain hopeful that time and distance will allow both Reese and Vandersloot to move past the recent discord.
For now, the franchise’s direction rests on whether its youngest star and its most accomplished veteran can find common ground.
