Sunday night's matchup between the Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs has grabbed national attention amidst an AFC playoff race that is white hot with only five games left.
Questions about both teams abound after inconsistency and tumult has helped define the individual courses of each. Thankfully, Charles Robinson (@CRob5769 on X) of Fansided's "Arrowhead Addict" (@ArrowheadAddict on X) joined the Texans Roundtable to discuss the Chiefs perspective of the contest:
Charles Robinson: Well, obviously with the team’s track record anything is possible. The experience and leadership are still in tact, but there is certainly cause for doubt at the very least when it comes to a playoff appearance, let alone a run. Sunday will tell us a lot about the 2025 team’s mental makeup and could make or break any possibility of playoff chances.
CR: As of right now (about 4:00 P.M. central on Saturday) Taylor and Smith are still technically doubtful, but things are not looking promising on the offensive line in general at the moment. The adjustment has to be committing to the run game, much like Kansas City did in its win over the Colts two weeks ago.
That’s their only chance of preventing the Texans’ vaunted defensive front from pinning their ears back and making life a living hell for Mahomes. I’d expect to see more 12 personnel and under center formations from the Chiefs to give Jaylon Moore and Wanya Morris some help on the edges and an emphasis on feeding Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt and possibly former Texan Damien Pierce on Sunday night.
CR: With a loss, I’d say their playoff chances this season are slim. I don’t know that I’d consider a Super Bowl window closed, but I wouldn’t bet them to bring it home in 2025 at least.
CR: I wouldn’t classify the Chiefs imminent roster moves as a rebuild, more of a “re-tool” to Chiefs 3.0 in the Patrick Mahomes era. We’ve seen this once already, after the 2021 season when Tyreek Hill was traded and the Chiefs morphed into an offense that invested in the “death by 1,000 papercuts” approach and a defense that was suddenly one of the top-five in the league.
Remember early Mahomes era Chiefs defenses under Bob Sutton? Veach has suddenly and effectively turned over the roster before, I would expect something similar this off-season with the defensive line, running back and tight end positions being the focal points.
CR: The Chiefs have to commit to the run game first and foremost. Offensively they have to get creative with protections and give help to the two young replacement tackles. With the weapons Mahomes has on the outside, they can eventually make the Texans defense pay if they can subdue the pass rush.
Defensively, there has to be a focus on heating up Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud. If the defensive front seven can create pressure (something they’ve been awful at of late), the Chiefs secondary matches up well with the Texans' offensive weapons. So, realistically they have to win the battle in the trenches in three different ways to make this work.
Both teams have a lot to lose this weekend in the event of a loss. The Texans are riding their four-game win streak and have eyes on challenging for the AFC South crown after starting the season 0-3.
Tomorrow's matchup represent a chance to definitively lay claim to a rejuvenated season and renewed playoff hopes in Houston.
Last year's 23-14 AFC Divisional playoff loss against the Chiefs came down to special teams disasters, a porous offensive line and season ending injuries to wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell that occurred earlier in the season.
If the Texans can limit mistakes in special teams, perform admirably against Kansas City's defensive front, dominate time of possession and convert opportunities in the red zone, they can leave Arrowhead stadium with their eighth victory of the season, and their second in the Patrick Mahomes era of NFL football.
Do you think the Texans have what it takes to finally take down the Kansas City Chiefs under head coach DeMeco Ryans and quarterback C.J. Stroud's leadership?
