Liverpool are looking into strengthening two key positions in Andoni Iraola's squad amid question marks over the quality in those areas.
Liverpool's new sporting director Julian Ward and the rest of the Anfield recruitment team are searching across the world for the club's next major superstar, looking to help Andoni Iraola achieve great success as Reds boss.
With the January window only three months away, the rumour mill has begun over who could be the next player to join LFC, but what has been made clear through the opening weeks of this campaign are the areas in which Iraola needs support.
Full-Back Question Marks Remain
One of the areas that many fans hoped to see an improvement in with the appointment of Andoni Iraola in the summer was the full-back position.
REUTERS/Phil NobleLast season under Arne Slot, Liverpool's left and right back positions were often criticised due to how easy it seemed for opposition teams to get down both flanks and ultimately have a high probability of creating a massive opportunity to score against the LFC defence.
But, while some will have thought that it was the system over the players that were the issue, others have persistently pointed at the profile of full-backs currently at the club.
Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong
Jeremie Frimpong appeared to be a good signing back in the summer of 2025, with the club needing to replace the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Dutch defender had come off the back of several good years at Bayer Leverkusen, including being part of a team that went invincible during the Bundesliga season.
REUTERS/Phil NobleFrimpong made the switch back to England, with the hope from many being that he could strike up a partnership with Florian Wirtz, in order to get the best out of the pair of them.
But so far, the right-back has struggled physically and technically to adapt to life in the Premier League, with his defensive capabilities in particular raising alarm bells.
On the other side, Milos Kerkez was signed from Bournemouth in the same summer, with the expectation being that he would become Liverpool's first-choice left-back, with legendary Scottish defender Andy Robertson being demoted to number two.
REUTERS/Russell CheyneRobertson would end up featuring a lot more than anticipated due to Kerkez struggling to adapt to life on Merseyside, with the left back often being found at the heart of LFC's defensive errors.
The two full-backs have remained suspect defensively, although Milos Kerkez has improved this campaign, the club may still look for new recruits in those areas.
Missing a Defensive Midfielder?
Another highlighted weakness of this Reds squad is the lack of defensive cover in the middle of the pitch.
Despite the departure of Scouse midfielder Curtis Jones this summer, the club opted not to sign a replacement, as they believed that Iraola had enough options to cope with the relentless schedule this season.
REUTERS/Claudia GrecoAnd while the number of players available may look strong, the profile of these players leaves a huge gap in the squad: a defensive midfielder.
None of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, or even Trey Nyoni are natural ball-winning, defensive-minded players. This subsequently leaves Andoni Iraola's side vulnerable, especially when hit on the counter-attack.
Links to a player who can fill that void left in the squad have therefore surfaced, with many thinking that a certain Ligue 1 player could be a top priority for Liverpool.
What Has Been Reported?
According to David Lynch, midfield is set to be an area that is looked at over the next 12 months at the club.
Monaco starlet Lamine Camara is said to be a player LFC would like, and with the calls late in the last transfer window to wait for a move out of France, the Merseyside club could make a move for Camara in 2027.
The report goes on to say that the full-back area is also going to be something Julian Ward and the recruitment team look into very soon.
