Trey Nyoni has impressed Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola during pre-season, with reports suggesting the 19-year-old midfielder is set to remain at Anfield and play a more prominent role next season.
What Role Do You Think Trey Nyoni Will Play This Season?
Trey Nyoni has been one of the hot topics of conversation this pre-season as he has taken his opportunity to play in several games for LFC over in the US with both hands.
However, you would have been forgiven for thinking that a loan move to the Championship or a top division in Europe may have been the logical next step in Nyoni's development.
But it would appear that Andoni Iraola has different plans for Liverpool's young midfielder, as recent reports have suggested he could be set to remain at Anfield for the upcoming campaign.
Trey Nyoni Has Taken His Chance To Shine Under The New Boss
As is the case whenever a new manager arrives at a football club, all players are given a clean slate, meaning any views on them previously are irrelevant, and everyone must earn their spot in the starting XI, and the arrival of Andoni Iraola this summer has been no exception to that.
Trey Nyoni has been a player highly thought of in many LFC quarters for a few years now, and it appeared former Liverpool boss Arne Slot was going to give Nyoni some valuable first-team minutes last season.
But despite reportedly rejecting a number of loan approaches for the 19-year-old, he was just given 21 minutes of Premier League football under the Dutch manager.
Barry Reeger-USA TODAY SportsBut Nyoni has been given a fresh opportunity to impress a new manager this pre-season, and it is safe to say he has done just that.
Nyoni has been exceptional in pre-season, putting on full display his ability to carry the ball up the pitch, his eye for a pass, and his desire to win the ball back when the team loses possession. He has looked like a seasoned professional.
Nyoni Set To Stay At Liverpool For Next Season
It is therefore little surprise that it has been reported by both James Pearce and Jack Lusby that Trey Nyoni is set to stick around at LFC for this upcoming season.
Jack Lusby, in particular, went on to say that Nyoni is set for a more prominent role within this Liverpool team and that Iraola isn't just keeping him around to make up the numbers, and instead views Trey Nyoni as a genuine first-team option going into his first season in charge of the Reds.
Steve Roberts-Imagn ImagesThis decision may have also been made given the ongoing transfer links with Curtis Jones moving to Inter Milan this summer, so could Nyoni be set to claim the minutes on the pitch that Curtis Jones looks ready to vacate?
Author's Verdict
This is a very interesting decision made by Andoni Iraola and one that should excite many LFC fans.
It would have been quite easy for Liverpool to send Nyoni out on loan and further develop him away from the club, but whether or not that was the plan before pre-season, after pre-season, Trey Nyoni has changed everyone's mind.
And, just like he said that he wanted to at the start of pre-season, he has now firmly put himself in the manager's thinking ahead of the new season getting underway in just over a week's time.
