Angklung Music

Aug 12, 2022 7:32 AM

Is music a language?

My daughter graduated in linguistics from UKM or Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia which is one of the top Malaysian national universities.

UKM apparently thinks so as my daughter learned to play the Angklung as part of her course.

The Angklung is a bamboo musical instrument used in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Each Angklung is tuned to a particular note. In order to play a song, several players holding different Angklungs will have to "talk" so that music is in their conversation.

The reknown pianists,Alice Sara Ott is one of my favourite musicians.

Her mother is a Japanese and her father is a German.

Which language is Alice best in?

Alice says that she cannot identify fully with German and also cannot identify fully with Japanese.

Alice says that her language is music. A language in which she is an expert expressing not just sounds but feelings and emotions in her playing.

Instead of using grammar, vocabulary, syntax, punctuation etc, Alice uses intonation, colours, rythems, musicality etc as she interprets the notes of composers
