Haris Rauf refuses to play Australia Tests

Nov 21, 2023 6:40 AM

Pakistan Chief Selector Wahab Riaz on Monday revealed that pacer Haris Rauf won’t be available for the upcoming Test series against Australia.

"We spoke to the captain and coach, and they wanted to utilise Haris Rauf as an impact player in Test cricket. We weren't demanding more than 10-12 overs a day from him, which he has done in ODIs.

Expecting a frontline bowler to bowl merely 10 overs in an entire day's play seems a bit unrealistic, right? The big question arises - where do the remaining 80 overs come from? If you're fielding five specialized bowlers, spreading the workload evenly among them at around 20 overs each might seem feasible. However, this approach might thin down the batting order, posing a challenge.

Now, imagine having an all-rounder or a part-time bowler take on 20 overs in a day. That's a considerable workload, and it could reduce the pressure on the batsmen, potentially impacting the outcome of the game. Even with a strategy of four bowlers, if two seamers shoulder 20 overs each, that leaves 60 overs for spinners on surfaces that aren't particularly spin-friendly.

No matter how you analyze it, limiting Rauf to 10 overs a day burdens the lineup excessively. While if he were someone like Mark Wood, known for swiftly dismantling opponents within a short spell, maybe it could be deemed worthwhile. However, Rauf's track record doesn't quite match up to that level of impact. It's disheartening when a player pulls out of a test series, especially when it seems linked to concerns about potential injury  and missing in T20 leagues.

Efficiently managing a bowler's workload is pivotal in cricket, ensuring both performance and player well-being. Striking the right balance between bowling strengths and lineup dynamics is crucial for a team's success.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THIS DECISION FROM RAUF???
