 'Blade Runner 2049' Review:

'Pain reminds you the joy you felt was real'.

This poignant quote encapsulates the essence of 'Blade Runner 2049', a film that transcends the boundaries of sequels and stands as a masterpiece in its own right.

WOW! WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW! And another WOW!

This is how I felt throughout the entire viewing experience. 'Blade Runner 2049' is a phenomenal follow-up to the original, addressing the shortcomings of the 1982 film without relying on director's cuts or extended versions.

It's everything a sequel should be: respectful of its predecessor while forging its own path. And the best part? You can watch this film without having seen the original and still be completely engrossed. This is a lesson that 'The Force Awakens', 'Jurassic World', and 'Finding Dory' should take to heart.

'Blade Runner 2049' is a film that will inspire aspiring filmmakers to pick up a camera and create art. It's that good.As I said in my review of 'Arrival', Denis Villeneuve is a director who consistently pushes the boundaries of cinematic excellence.

Each film he releases feels like a masterpiece in the making, and 'Blade Runner 2049' truly lives up to that expectation. His previous films, 'Prisoners' and 'Enemy', showcased immense promise, but Villeneuve has surpassed even those expectations with this film. He displays an incredible respect for the original 'Blade Runner' without resorting to nostalgic pandering for easy audience appeal. Instead, he adds fresh perspectives to the universe, making the film truly thought-provoking.

Roger Deakins, a master cinematographer, consistently outdoes himself with every film he works on. This might be his best work yet. The stunning imagery, framing, and masterful use of darkness and neon lights contribute significantly to the film's awe-inspiring world-building. It's one of the most visually stunning films I've seen this year, and nothing will top it.

If Deakins doesn't win an Oscar for his work on this film, then nothing will. The Academy has lost my respect over the years, but this would be a truly egregious oversight.

The performances in the film were uniformly excellent. Ryan Gosling and Robin Wright were, as always, brilliant.

Harrison Ford delivered what was perhaps his most captivating performance to date. And Jared Leto, finally shedding the baggage of his 'Suicide Squad' role, showcased genuine acting talent in a limited screen time. His portrayal felt authentic and grounded, a welcome departure from his previous over-the-top style.

The score was truly phenomenal, possessing a raw power that literally vibrated the cinema speakers. The impact was so powerful that I didn't even need to see it in IMAX.

What truly surprised me was the film's captivating storytelling and emotional depth. By the end, I found myself fighting back tears. The filmmakers opted for practical effects over extensive CGI, and the results are remarkable.

Overall, Villeneuve achieved what many considered impossible. His next film is eagerly anticipated. I highly recommend seeing this movie – it's a must-see.
