Cowboys All-Pro Kicker Brandon Aubrey is a free agent, and the franchise would be wise to sort out his future rather quickly.
The Dallas Cowboys and contracts haven't exactly been the smoothest duo over the past couple of decades.
But one contract is set to perhaps be the easiest to get done.
And that's one for All-Pro kicker Brandon "Butter" Aubrey.
One of the best kickers in football, and an absolute weapon anywhere from 50-yards plus, it feels like a no-brainer to get a deal done as quickly as possible.
Why? Well, with Harrison Butker the highest-paid kicker in football at $6.4 million APY.
So, it makes sense that a quick deal could be struck between the two, right?
Our own Mike Fisher has revealed that Aubrey's representation and the Cowboys had a brief talk on a contract earlier in the season.
"Early in the season, the Cowboys went to Todd France, the agent for Brandon Aubrey, and talk contract,” Fish said on the Fish Report. “Now, how specific did they get? I don't know. Early in the season, he's perfect. Fantastic. And the agents talking, I don't know what the number was.
"Aubrey closes the season, I believe, by missing five kicks in his last seven games. So now, do you go to Todd France and go, well, you wanted the money to be way up here when he was perfect. Now he's missed five kicks in the last seven games or whatever it's been. So now will you take less?
"The art of the deal, as Jerry likes to borrow and call it. It's tricky."
The back and forth will always be a fascinating part of the contract negotiations.
And we have seen with Jerry and the Cowboys that the contracts that "should" be easy and straightforward are often anything but.
However, in this case, given the "top-of-the-market" contract is "only" say, $7 million APY, not $60 million, this feels like a deal that can get done relatively quickly.
In truth, it should. And Fish agrees.
"If I'm Jerry, I'm calling the agent, and saying, "Todd (France), give me a reasonable number that makes him the highest-paid kicker ever, and let's do it," Fish added. "That's all. If you really do this earnestly, I'll give it to you.
"That's what I would do. It's not a winning negotiation strategy, but Jerry never wins this the big-money negotiations anyway. He always gives in, anyway. Why don't you get your easiest win early and simply give in now?”
Laying it out like that, this negotiation for one of the best kickers in football couldn't be easier.
A three or four-year deal at $7 million APY for Aubrey?
Yeah, do it now, Jerry.
