Former unified world welterweight champ Errol Spence has been out of action for three years, since Terence Crawford wiped him out in their undisputed fight. Now, he's talking from training camp about a month from going to Australia to fight Tim Tszyu.
Former unified welterweight world champion Errol Spence and undefeated two-division world champion Jermall Charlo held a media workout early this week in Houston ahead of their respective bouts on for a Sunday July 26th (Saturday night July 25th) PBC on Prime Video Pay-Per-View event from Afterpay Arena in Sydney, Australia.
Two of boxing's biggest stars from a few years ago, Spence and Charlo are training together in Charlo's home area of Houston under legendary cornerman Ronnie Shields. This, as they prepare to travel "down under" and make statements in pursuit of world titles in new weight classes for both.
Former WBC/WBA/IBF champ Spence, 28-1, 22 KOs, will come out of a three year, essential retirement and will face Australian star and former world junior middleweight champ Tim Tszyu in a pivotal 154 lb. main event.
Meanwhile, Charlo returns to the ring against Australia's Koen Mazoudier in a 10-round super middleweight contest.
The 36 year old Spence said after an open to the media workout,
"We’re putting in the work and leaving no stone unturned. I’m excited. Ronnie’s style fits me well. I’ve always been a huge fan of Jermall and how he fights. Plus Ronnie has the experience too. I listened to Ronnie’s concept of training and I felt like it fit me to a t. When we worked out, the chemistry felt really good."
On the long haul to Australia,
“I had my first world title fight overseas (KO of England's Kell Brook), plus countless amateur fights. So it’s something I’ve always been comfortable with. I’m not worried about the fans or anything like that, because at the end of the day it’s just me and him in there.
“This was the right time to come back, and against the right opponent. My body feels good, so I said why not?
Spence was demolished by Terence Crawford over a 9th round TKO loss in his biggest career fight for the undisputed welterweight championship in Las Vegas in July of 2023. He hasn't fought since.
As for Tszyu, he won a tune-up for this battle with a 10 round decision over Denis Nurja back in Australia. Tszyu had been living and training in the U.S. trying to get bigger paydays, etc. However, he was beaten twice by Sebastian Fundora and once by Bahkram Murtazaliev in world title fights over the last two years.
As for the former WBC middleweight champ Charlo, he was stripped for inactivity. So, the 36 year old has now moved up to 168 lb. and said from the camp,
"I've been training really hard and staying at peace. I can tell it’s working by the way my body’s flowing. Everything is just really clicking.
“I normally am one of the few guys who like to really study my opponents, but I don’t know anything about him. I’m putting my trust in Ronnie Shields. I’m gonna go in there and be ready to make adjustments.
On being in the same camp with Spence,
“Errol and I are kind of total opposites. He doesn’t talk as much as me, he’s just about the work. I like to talk a little more. We used to be roommates in the amateurs and now we have this chance to work around each other in the pros. He works hard and I love training around him.
“I want to go for another world title in a third weight division. I feel a lot more comfortable at 168. It really doesn’t matter who they put in front of me. I feel like I’m gonna have my advantages in this division. I’m planning to make this quarter of my career the best one."
It will be a challenge for both to go almost 10,000 miles away to Australia to compete, but there are bigger rewards waiting if Spence and Charlo can deliver victories.
