Oleksandr Usyk Survives Major Scare To Stop Rico Verhoeven/Retain Titles

Featured stories

It wasn't easy, and it ended controversially, but Oleksandr Usyk retained his unified heavyweight titles with a dramatic 11th round TKO stoppage of Kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven Saturday night in Egypt. The bout capped off DAZN/Ring magazine pay-per-view in the shadow of the pyramids in the tourist area of Giza.

The unbeaten, but 39 year old Usyk, heavily favored as much as 55 to 1 at some sports books, clearly looked slow and perhaps, undertrained for fighting the younger and more aggressive Verhoeven.

From the very beginning, he champ had trouble getting off with combinations and meanwhile, the kickboxing champion, who had won 26 straight kickboxing title fights but had only fought one round in a pro boxing ring in his life, continued to land straight right hands and be the quicker fighter throughout much of the first half of the fight.

Usyk, 25-0, 16 KOs, did score with some good combinations in the third round of the fight, including a big left hook. But, Vehoeven shook it off and was busier through the middle of the fight, plus he used his 6 ft. 5 in. and 250 lb. size to lean on Usyk along the ropes in an attempt to wear him down.

Verhoven appeared to slow some in the 10th round and Usyk caught him with combinations. And, there was also a mouse developing under Verhoeven's left eye. Finally, in the dramatic 11th round a barrage of punches by Usyk staggered  Verhoeven forward and he eventually caught the challenger with a right uppercut that sent him down on his knees in the corner.

That's when controversy took over, as Verhoeven got up wearily, but British referee Mark Lyson delayed letting Usyk come into finish him. He instead called timeout to let Verhoven's corner clean and put back in his mouthpiece.

Once, he restarted the fight with only seconds left in the round, Usyk landed another barrage of rights and lefts along the ropes. But, then, seemingly after the bell Lyson jumped between the fighters and waved his hands declaring a TKO stoppage.

Watch the stoppage here and you will hear the bell a full second before Lyson jumps between the fighters,

Veraeven's corner went berserk, believing the round was over, but to no avail, as it goes as an 11th round TKO at 2:59 for the champion.

Clearly, Usyk was having problems and the official judges scoring through 10 rounds showed Verhoeven ahead by one point on one card and a draw of 95-95 on the other two. The 11th was clearly a 10-8 round for the champ and those 95-95 cards would have had him up 2 points for the 12th round.

Another valid point is- Usyk was going to have the final round to finish the weary Verhoeven, too.

Still, the challenger gave a great accounting for as little boxing experience he has and in the end, it was a wild end to the pay per view.

Now, we wonder if there will be a rematch or will Usyk maybe decide this struggle at 39 was enough and he want to go to the hall of fame undefeated?

Here's the undercard recap below,

Hamzah Sheeraz Wipes Out Alem Begic- Super Middleweights

The Brit Sheeraz completely dominated and destroyed the German Begic inside of two rounds to win the vacant WBO super middleweight championship in the co-feature bout of the night.

Sheeraz, as much as a 25-1 favorite, used his 6'3" frame to control the first round scoring thudding straights rights and uppercuts with both hands in the opening three minutes. Begic's face was already reddening after the shot he took in the first round and he was doing little to move out of the way or fire back.

It was more of the same in the second round, as Sheeraz, now 22-0-1, 18 KOs scored with a big left uppercut inside that rocked Begic. And, then, at distance peppered the 39 year old stationary target with combinations.

After wobbling Begic, 29-1-1, with a left to the head, he landed a huge left hook to the right side of the body and Begic crumbled to his knees. The referee counted him out at 2:33 of the second.

The 26 year old Sheeraz now sets his sights on a possible fight down the road with future hall of famer Canelo Alvarez. He had previously wiped out Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga in three rounds last July in New York in his debut at 168 lb. However, it's more likely that Sheeraz would have a title defense in his home country first later this year.

Jack Catterall Decisions Shakhram Giyasov- Welterweights

England's Catterall, 33-2, 14 KOs, dominated the WBA welterweight top contender Giyasov dropping him in the first round with a left and never looking back in a 12 round near shutout.

He consistently scored with straight right jabs out of the southpaw stance and lefts behind them throughout the bout bloodying Giyasov's nose midway through the fight.

The 32 year old Catterall, a former world title challenger at 140 lb., won easily on the official cards 118-109, 119-108, 116-111.  Giyasov, now 17-1, had been waiting for a possible world title shot with Rolly Romero, but the WBA, as the always do, fooled around and wouldn't order Romero to fight him or be stripped,

However on this night the Uzbek fighter living and training in New York had nothing for the Lancashire, England veteran Catterall. And, now Catterall will wait for the possible shot at Romero later this year.

Frank Sanchez Booming KO of Richard Torrez- Heavyweights

Cuban born Frank Sanchez needed only one shot to emphatically eliminate American heavyweight hopeful Richard Torrez and become the new IBF mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk.

Sanchez, now 26-1, 19 KOs, who has been battling knee problems that postponed this bout from earlier in the year, actually lost the first round as the smaller Torrez landed a couple of good combinations.

However, he got close to Torrez's right side early in round two and as the Californian dipped to his left and had his hands down, Sanchez drilled him with a short right uppercut on the chin. Torrez splatted to the canvas hitting his head for the "double impact" and could not get recover getting counted out.

Watch the KO here:

The 33 year old Sanchez, who lost by 7th round KO to fellow contender Agit Kabayel in May 2024, had won a comeback fight Ramon Olivas in Mexico in February last year. And, he's now in back in the picture, big time.

As for Torrez, who is promoted by Top Rank Boxing and is a former Olympic Silver Medalist in 2021, he drops now 14-1 with the resounding loss.
