He sat down with Corriere dello Sport and straight up fed the hopes of a whole country that's been dying for a homegrown hero. Makes sense, honestly. Italy hasn't had one since Alberto Ascari. "There's nothing wrong with dreaming about Antonelli in Ferrari colors" Piero said no filter. But he also kept it real because let's be real, being Italian and getting that seat is no joke. "A bunch have tried, like my friend Michele Alboreto, and it just didn't happen. But Kimi's already showing he's different. Give him time and he's gonna be massive" he added.
Right now Antonelli's tied to Mercedes and he's proving why they snatched him up. He's sitting second in the standings with 47 points just four behind George Russell. Oh and he just won in China. Meanwhile Ferrari's own guys Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have 34 and 33. You have to wonder if those numbers are making anyone in Maranello squirm a little. The kid's not just hype he's actually out there delivering.Lewis Hamilton
Piero also touched on Hamilton and what it means to wear that prancing horse. Nobody knows yet if the weight of Ferrari got to Lewis from the jump. "Ferrari hits you hard emotionally even if you're one of the greats" he said. He didn't come out and say the mystique messed with Lewis but he made it clear this team hits different. Charles handles it one way Lewis another but that pressure gets everyone eventually.
This whole thing with Piero speaking up wasn't random either. Maranello is clearly thinking long term and they want an Italian in the mix. Antonelli's 19 and already looking like he belongs. In a country that breathes F1 having a local kid fighting up front in red would be insane for business. Merch sales alone would go through the roof. But Mercedes isn't just gonna hand him over especially now that he's paying them back with results.
Social media already melted down obviously. Ferrari fans are already picturing it: Leclerc and Antonelli together someday. Then you got the other side telling everyone to chill because the kid just got started and Mercedes isn't stupid. One thing's for sure though Piero just threw the first punch in what's gonna be a long fight.
For now Antonelli's doing his thing stacking laps and enjoying the ride. But when someone like Piero Ferrari talks like that you know the kid and his people are listening. In F1 crazy stuff happens all the time. Sometimes dreams come true. Especially the red ones. Guess we'll see what happens next.
