Andrea Kimi Antonelli cements his lead at Spa while George Russell falters, allowing Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen to tighten the hunt for the top spots.
Formula 1 has updated the 2026 Drivers' Championship standings following the results of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli extended his lead in first place after his victory, overtaking Charles Leclerc in the closing stages of the race in the Ardennes.
His teammate, George Russell, was the most affected by the Belgian GP, suffering another retirement that has further distanced him from Antonelli in the championship. Although more than half the season remains, the gap at the top continues to widen with each passing week but the British driver will undoubtedly have to investigate thoroughly why he is unable to extract the performance from the German car in the same way as his Italian teammate.
The main beneficiaries were the other two drivers who finished on the podium: Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen. Leclerc has moved closer to the podium in the Drivers' Championship, threatening Russell's third position and hoping to close the gap on Lewis Hamilton in second.
Meanwhile, Verstappen is on the verge of catching Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the McLaren duo, to break into the top five and improve his standing in the World Championship before the summer break among a lot of rumors about his future in the team.
Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto, two of the Latin American drivers on the Formula 1 grid, scored important points for their teams as they both fight to continue climbing positions in the midfield. Among the notable drivers who did not score points this past race weekend were Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg, all of whom finished outside the Top 10 of the Belgian GP.
