General Motors will inaugurate its power unit plant before Christmas. Mark Reuss thanks Pérez and Bottas for their patience in a debut season without points and warns that the team's construction process is logarithmic, not linear.
Cadillac already has a date for one of the most important milestones of its Formula 1 project. General Motors will inaugurate its power unit factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, next December 18 as announced by Mark Reuss president of the company, during a conference at the Autosport Business Exchange in New York: "We are going to inaugurate our entire engine factory so to speak, in Charlotte, North Carolina, on December 18 so that is evolving very well" Reuss declared.
The plant will be the nerve center of the development of GM's own power unit, which was approved by the FIA in April 2025 as a supplier from the 2029 season, however the deadlines may not be ideal. The FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has committed to Formula 1 returning to V8 engines, potentially with sustainable fuel and a lower proportion of electrical energy for 2031. In that scenario, GM's engine would have at best two seasons in action or possibly only one if the change is brought forward to 2030.
Meanwhile, Cadillac competes in 2026 with customer Ferrari power units and the team's debut season has been complicated. It is the only team that has not yet scored points and the MAC-26 has qualified in the last position in the last four events, despite this Reuss maintains confidence in the project: "We know we are not here to finish last, so we have to keep moving forward and build this team, build the power unit and build the car as we did in the GTP category, here it takes a little more time because it is a scenario in which we had never competed, you have to gather the right people, with the right engineers and the right drivers and we have to get that process going, which is logarithmic, not linear" he explained.
Reuss also had words of gratitude for the team's drivers, Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, who have contributed invaluable experience in this context despite recording the worst results of their careers: "You can't win every race, no one can win every race; so when it happens, when they have an unlucky day or mistakes are made, they leave that competition behind and perfect their art, whether with the car, with themselves, physically or whatever and they drive in search of that perfection. Both gentlemen who race for us do precisely that and really understand what is needed and what the process is like, to be honest I am very happy that they have patience with us; it takes a special person for that" he stated.
The inauguration of the engine factory in December will mark a before and after in the Cadillac project. The Charlotte plant will be the heart of the development of the power unit that in 2029, must be up to the level of the big manufacturers on the grid. Meanwhile the team continues working to improve the MAC-26's performance and score its first points in Formula 1, an objective that has resisted this debut season but that remains the immediate priority.
