The Spaniard broke his silence and spoke about the 'links' with the German team for 2027. After signing a multi year contract with Grove, he assures that his commitment to the project is total, especially in difficult times.
The Formula 1 driver market is always full of rumors and speculation, and Carlos Sainz has been one of the protagonists in recent weeks, however the Spanish driver has wanted to put an end to the conjectures in a decisive way: he never seriously considered the option of leaving Williams to join Audi for the 2027 season.
The news of his renewal with the Grove team alongside Alexander Albon was confirmed last week, but what has generated more interest are the subsequent statements of the Madrid native, who has assured that the rumors linking him to the Hinwil team had no real foundation: "No, they were just the usual paddock rumors, I can confirm that this year I never seriously considered going anywhere else" stated Sainz in an interview.
The context of these statements is important. Williams is going through a particularly complicated 2026 season, the FW48 has been losing ground in the hierarchy and has accumulated six consecutive races without scoring points, which had generated some uncertainty about the continuity of its lineup and even the team principal, James Vowles, had publicly expressed his fear of not being able to retain his drivers.
However, the reality is that Sainz not only stays, but has signed a multi year contract, which suggests a long term commitment to the Williams project. The Spaniard explained that the renewal process was thoughtful and that although he evaluated the overall situation, there was a determining factor that tipped the balance: his character.
"I have never liked leaving a team when it is going through a difficult period, it is not in my character to go somewhere else if the situation has worsened since I joined the team. When I committed to the Williams project, I knew there could be difficult moments and although the one we are going through now is particularly tough, I am ready to accept it" confessed Sainz.
This statement reflects a personal philosophy that the driver has maintained throughout his career, far from seeking the easy way out when results do not follow, Sainz prefers to take on the challenge and work to reverse the situation: "No one in the team is happy with the current situation and we are all pushing to change it as quickly as possible, but as I said it is not in my nature to abandon ship when things get tough" he added.
The comparison with his teammate Albon is inevitable. While the Thai driver committed only for 2027, Sainz has signed an agreement that extends beyond that, hinting at a link with Williams until at least 2028. This positions the Spaniard as a fundamental piece in the British team's long-term project that seeks to recover lost glory.
