Max Verstappen culminated a perfect weekend with his first career Singapore Grand Prix win.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen led from start to finish to bring home his first career Grand Prix win in Singapore. The Dutchman culminated a perfect weekend that saw him win from pole in the Sprint Race and then start from pole in the Grand Prix to bring home the victory.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli came home second and third to join Verstappen in the podium celebrations. After their collision during the Sprint Race, McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri had a cleaner Sunday and rounded out the Top 5.
Meanwhile, Mercedes' George Russell and Red Bull's Isack Hadjar salvaged points from the back. They received hefty grid penalties due to engine changes, with both drivers starting at the back of the grid. But their cars proved to be too fast for those in the back, and they stormed through the pack.
Russell finished the Singapore race in ninth place, while Hadjar took the checkered flag in tenth.
Verstappen held off Leclerc into Turn 1
Leclerc had a quicker reaction time than Verstappen and had a look into Turn 1. But Verstappen positioned his car well and squeezed off Leclerc, preserving his lead. The Ferrari driver was within shouting distance for several laps before opting to back off to preserve his tyres.
Meanwhile, Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad had a poor start after getting sandwiched by two cars, most notably Williams' Carlos Sainz Jr. Lindblad tumbled down the order from P10 to P13.
Hamilton was the first to pit
Lewis Hamilton started the race on medium tyres, with the plan to take a longer first stint. However, he quickly found out that the mediums were not the right tyres in this race. On Lap 19, the seven-time World Champion became the first driver to make a pit stop, changing his tyres to the softs.
The early tyre change meant that Hamilton chose the two-stop strategy, but he couldn't make it work. He couldn't overtake Leclerc for second place, and as a result, he had to back off to avoid degrading his tyres further.
Stroll's retirement triggered a VSC on Lap 39
Aston Martin's Lance Stroll stopped his car on the side due to a clutch issue, triggering a Virtual Safety Car on Lap 39. Surprisingly, only one of the two Ferrari drivers took advantage of the reduced pit time loss due to VSC conditions.
Leclerc made his second stop under VSC, but Hamilton opted to stay out. It could've been a golden opportunity for Hamilton to get rid of his not-so-old soft tyres and potentially fight for second place or the win with the two-stop strategy.
In the end, Hamilton had to make do with severely degraded tyres in the end. From P3 at one point, he couldn't keep faster cars behind and unfortunately tumbled down to P6.
