The Asturian assures that he has not yet decided his future and that he has spoken with Stroll and Newey, opens the door to remaining linked to the category outside the cockpit.
Fernando Alonso still has not cleared up the unknown about his future in Formula 1, the Asturian driver in statements made during the preview of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, acknowledged that he has not yet made a decision about his continuity in the 2027 season: "Not yet, soon" Alonso responded when asked about his plans, making it clear that the doubt will remain for at least a few more weeks.
The two-time world champion confirmed that he has held conversations with the key figures of Aston Martin: "I've had some conversations" he explained, referring to the dialogues with Lawrence Stroll, owner of the team and Adrian Newey the aerodynamics genius who joined the British team. Asked if the team is trying to convince him to continue, Alonso was diplomatic: "Always good, you know, they are great people".
But the most revealing part of his statements was his intention to remain linked to Formula 1 regardless of what happens with his seat at Aston Martin: "I'll be in F1 anyway, even if I'm not driving, I'll be commenting on some television," stated the Asturian, who even joked about the possibility of joining the television team as a pit lane reporter, a sign that Alonso does not contemplate distancing himself from the paddock, whatever his role.
On the sporting side, Alonso was cautious but optimistic about the improvements that Aston Martin has introduced for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix: "We've improved the handling a bit, we've managed to save some weight for this race and we'll try to be more competitive" he noted, the weight reduction was one of the pending subjects of the AMR26 and the team trusts that this final update will allow it to get closer to the regulatory limit and improve performance on track.
The Asturian also positively valued the introduction of sprint races on new circuits and considered that the format can make sense in Monaco: "Everything revolves around qualifying, so now instead of one you have two and the race is what it is, and probably people don't enjoy the race too much. So now you have one and a half races but you have two qualifyings, which is quite exciting" Alonso explained.
The Asturian's future remains an unknown but his message is clear: he does not plan to abandon Formula 1. Whether behind the wheel of an Aston Martin that hopes to make a leap in quality in 2027 with the new regulations and the Honda engine or from a position outside the cockpit, Alonso has clear that his link with the queen category of motorsport is far from over.
His experience, his charisma and his knowledge of the sport make him a valuable asset, both on and off the track. The decision, according to his own words, will come "soon", meanwhile the paddock watches attentively every movement of the Asturian, aware that when his retirement comes it will leave a void difficult to fill.
Alonso has been a witness and protagonist of several eras of Formula 1 and his legacy transcends titles and victories. His future in any form, will remain linked to the category that saw him grow.
