Andrea Stella defends the philosophy of letting his drivers compete, but admits that the internal battle cost them time against Verstappen. The team will review the clash to see if they could have managed it better and optimized the final result.
The Italian Grand Prix left a new chapter in the relationship between the McLaren drivers. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri had a tense duel in the final stages of the race that ended with the Briton putting two wheels on the grass and accusing his teammate of having pushed him off track. After this episode, Andrea Stella, the team principal, has assured that McLaren will review the incident to determine if they could have managed the situation better.
The altercation occurred in the final laps of the race, when both drivers were fighting for fourth position. Norris overtook Piastri on lap 48 but the Australian recovered the position one lap later. The Briton tried to return the overtake but found a gap that was closing and ended up with two wheels on the grass, suggesting that Piastri "pushed me off." The tension was evident on the team radio.
Stella, however, downplayed the incident: "When we reviewed it I think we saw that the episode is much more benign than it might have seemed in the heat of the moment" declared the Italian. The McLaren boss explained that the decision not to interfere in the fight between his drivers was intentional: "The two cars were on the same tires, the same tire age, the same car, so we thought there was no need to interfere in the normal development of the race. We let them compete, we believe it was the right thing to do" he stated.
The team has a history of internal reviews after the Monza race. Last year, McLaren's famous "papaya rules" were under the spotlight when Piastri was ordered to let Norris pass. On this occasion, the analysis will focus on whether the internal battle cost them a better position against their rivals: "I think you're right to highlight that as soon as you fight with your teammate, you can lose time. So, was there a better way for McLaren to face Max Verstappen? We will review it" admitted Stella.
The Dutchman from Red Bull was the big beneficiary of the duel between the McLarens. Verstappen managed to overtake both to take the third step of the podium behind the Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Stella acknowledged the superiority of the Red Bull: "I think overall Max was faster, he just got caught in that hook you have this year when you lose the tow here at Monza and you have to use energy to defend yourself from someone else" he explained.
The review of the incident will be an exercise in self criticism for McLaren. The team seeks to optimize its performance and prevent internal competition from costing them options in the championship. Stella trusts that the analysis will allow them to find areas of improvement in the management of duels between their drivers without giving up the philosophy of letting them compete.
The constructors' championship is very tight and every point is vital. McLaren knows it cannot afford to lose opportunities due to a lack of coordination between its drivers. The review of the Monza duel will be key to establishing clearer guidelines for the future and ensuring that the ambition of Norris and Piastri translates into the best possible result for the team.
