The world champion acknowledged that he had a raise after renewing, but denied astronomical figures. He states that his rivals' track records justify their million dollar contracts, although he trusts he can match them in the future with his on track performance.

Lando Norris has spoken frankly about his financial situation at McLaren. The current Formula 1 world champion confirmed that his recent contract renewal included a salary increase but was forceful in denying the rumors circulating in the media and online about astronomical figures. In an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph, the Woking driver explained why his salary remains far below that of Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen.

"I think I should earn the same as them, but the new contract certainly doesn't come close to the values I've seen online unfortunately!" declared the Briton. Norris clarified that, although the new agreement is a bit more than the previous contract as happens with any renewal, the difference with the best paid drivers on the grid remains abysmal: "It certainly doesn't come close to the level of Lewis or Max" he insisted.

The 26 year old driver did not avoid the comparative analysis, Norris argued that the track records of Verstappen and Hamilton, with multiple world titles and decades of dominance, justify that they maintain the most lucrative contracts in the sport: "In a way it shouldn't be like that, because I haven't achieved as much as they have in their careers" he acknowledged honestly. The Briton is aware that his achievements, although notable with his first championship in 2025, do not yet reach the historical dimension of his rivals.

However, the McLaren champion is not satisfied with that reality: "On the other hand I think it could be like that, to have equal salaries because I think I can compete with them whenever necessary and I can do a better job whenever required" he stated. Norris presented a dual vision: respect for his rivals' careers but absolute confidence in his own talent and ability to match them on track.

Norris's statements come at a sweet moment for the Briton, who occupies fourth position in the drivers' championship with 159 points and two wins this season. The renewal with McLaren until 2030 ensures his stability in the team that saw him grow and the salary increase is a reflection of his status as world champion, however, the Briton made it clear that his ambition is not limited to the sporting side.

"I don't know when my next contract renewal will be, but I hope I can match them someday" stated Norris. The phrase sums up his mentality: the goal is not only to win races but to reach the economic and sporting status of the great names in Formula 1 history. In a sport where salaries are a reflection of perceived value, Norris aspires to close the gap that separates him from the elite.

Norris's case is not isolated in the paddock, contemporary Formula 1 has seen an escalation of astronomical salaries, with Hamilton and Verstappen at the top of the pyramid. The Briton, at 26, has time and talent to climb positions, his on track performance, his charisma and his ability to lead McLaren in its resurgence are strong arguments for future negotiations.

Formula 1 will resume its action from September 4 to 6 at Monza, the iconic Italian circuit that will host the Italian Grand Prix. Norris will seek to add his third victory of the season and continue closing the gap to the championship leaders and beyond the points, the Briton is clear that his true battle, also economic, is on its way to being won.
