The 19 year old championship leader arrives in Austria with a 41 point lead over Hamilton after his first retirement of the season in Barcelona: "It's going to be a tough battle because George is very fast and Lewis is in a great moment" he stated.

Kimi Antonelli has acknowledged that the fight for the 2026 Formula 1 title "is not going to be a walk in the park" after suffering his first retirement of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, a race that cost him 25 points and allowed Lewis Hamilton to close to within 41 points in the drivers' championship. The 19 year old Italian, who had strung together five consecutive wins before his retirement in Montmeló, admitted that the pressure increases as the races go by and that the threat from Ferrari is real.

"All of them" Antonelli replied when asked in the Austrian Grand Prix press day whether he feared Hamilton, his teammate George Russell or reliability issues more: "It's not worry, I'm aware that it's not going to be a walk in the park. It's going to be a tough battle because George is very fast, Lewis is in a great moment and feels comfortable with the car. It's definitely going to be a tough battle, that's why it's important to maximize every opportunity because in Barcelona I had the problem at the end and lost a lot of points" he explained.

The Mercedes driver also referred to the possibility of other drivers joining the title fight: "I wouldn't rule out the others either, look what Max did last year, coming back from very far behind, that's why it's important to always be there, stay focused and give your best" said Antonelli, who is aware that the championship is still long and anything can happen.

Regarding Mercedes' internal rules for battles between teammates, Antonelli confirmed that the team has adjusted its approach after the fight between him and Russell in Barcelona allowed Hamilton to take the lead during the Virtual Safety Car: "How we compete, I think it will really depend on the situation, if we are under threat from other teams, then we will race differently but if it's just him and me, we will be able to compete freely" explained the Italian.
