The Mercedes boss admitted that the Briton is a firm championship contender after his victory in Barcelona. Hamilton is second, 41 points behind Antonelli, and has been on the podium in the last three races.

Toto Wolff has no doubts, Lewis Hamilton is a real threat to the 2026 Formula 1 championship after the Briton achieved his first victory with Ferrari at the Spanish Grand Prix, breaking Mercedes' winning streak that had extended since the start of the season: "I would rather not have to fight him for a title because I know what he is capable of, if he smells blood, he goes for it, I've seen it for many years when the Lewis Hamilton train starts rolling and then it's very difficult to stop it" declared Wolff after the race.

The Mercedes boss, who oversaw Hamilton's six titles at the German team, did not hesitate to describe the Briton as a serious title contender: "Yes, absolutely, we are at the very beginning of the season, the gap is 41 points, a retirement takes 25 points away from you and everything is open, that's why we can't afford not to finish, and we have to keep putting performance into the car and the power unit, not make mistakes, be smart with strategy and stay absolutely focused" stated the Austrian.

Hamilton has been on the podium in the last three races (Canada, Monaco and Barcelona) and has scored points consistently, an absolute contrast to his first season at Ferrari where he failed to reach the podium in 24 attempts. With the help of his new race engineer Carlo Santi and the development work of the SF-26 during the winter, the Briton has recovered his best level and has proven that he can win races in a competitive car.

Wolff analyzed the reasons behind his former driver's resurrection and highlighted several factors, from the regulation change to his personal life: "Hard work, and I think this is a car that is different from the previous era cars with the bouncing and stiffness, maybe it wasn't easy to feel, and this is a return to a more conventional driving style in terms of aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics, the engine management is completely different, but you can see he is driving strong" explained the Mercedes boss.

Wolff also referred to Hamilton's mood and his recent relationship with American celebrity Kim Kardashian: "I saw him on the podium on TV, that face shows me that he is very happy, maybe the girlfriend helps, it helped me to have a partner to have a stable family life, and they seem to get along very well, I think it's all those factors together, the emotional, personal and professional perspective, if they are in a good place, you win" concluded Wolff.

Hamilton is now second in the championship, just 41 points behind Antonelli, and with his morale sky high.
