The former German driver assures that the Briton has lost his status to Antonelli and should reconsider his future. He warns that, if he stays, his role will be that of a wingman for a young driver destined to break records.
George Russell faces a crossroads in his career. The British driver, who arrived at Mercedes with the ambition of being the team leader after Lewis Hamilton's departure, has been relegated to the background by Kimi Antonelli's unstoppable rise. Ralf Schumacher, former Formula 1 driver, has been the latest to point out this reality without mincing words: "I think George is now the number 2," he declared on Sky's Backstage Boxengasse podcast, sealing the change of hierarchy at the German team.
Russell's situation has deteriorated as Antonelli has been adding wins and extending his championship lead. After the Spanish Grand Prix, the Italian leads the standings with an 81 point advantage over his teammate, a gap that seems insurmountable with nine races remaining. Russell himself has acknowledged that his title chances are very unlikely: "I won't say it's over, but it's very unlikely that I'll be in that fight" admitted the Briton, showing a sincerity that contrasts with the frustration he must feel internally.
Schumacher went further in his analysis and warned that Russell should reflect on his future: "Now he must hope that the update or next year's car adapts a little better to his driving style" noted the German, who considers that the Briton is driving in a "totally insecure" way. For Schumacher, the problem is not only one of performance, but of adaptation to a car that does not fit his needs.
The comparison with Valtteri Bottas is inevitable, the Finn was Hamilton's teammate at Mercedes for five seasons, taking on a wingman role that allowed him to win races when the seven time world champion had problems: "There are many number 2 drivers like Bottas, who stay on a team for a very long time, they are capable of winning races when things don't go entirely well for the number one driver. George could win if Kimi had a problem right now" explained Schumacher.
However, Schumacher also acknowledged the value a driver like Russell has for Mercedes: "If the World Championship fight becomes close again, then Kimi Antonelli will also need a good teammate" he stated. The presence of two competitive drivers is fundamental for the car's development and for maintaining internal pressure, but that does not mean Russell should settle for a secondary role.
The former German driver believes Russell has room to maneuver: "For Mercedes to fire him, he would have to do a lot of things wrong" he noted, comparing his situation with Bottas's. Russell has a contract with Mercedes until the end of 2027 but his continuity beyond that will depend on his performance and his ability to accept his new role. Schumacher suggests that the Briton could opt for a change of scenery if he considers that his ambition to be world champion cannot be fulfilled at Brackley.
The decision is in Russell's hands: accept his role as number 2 and wait for an opportunity or seek a new challenge at another team where he can be the undisputed leader.
The 2026 season has been a hard blow to his aspirations, but also an opportunity to demonstrate his mental strength and his adaptability, time will tell if Russell chooses Bottas's path or if he decides to write his own story away from Mercedes.
