The Mercedes director describes as "completely absurd" the accusations of favoritism towards Antonelli over Russell.
Toto Wolff has lost his patience. The Mercedes director has come out in response to the rumors suggesting that the German team has favored Kimi Antonelli to the detriment of George Russell throughout the 2026 season. Far from ignoring the criticism, Wolff responded harshly to those who believe there is unequal treatment between his drivers: "They have no brain, whoever thinks that... it's completely absurd" the Austrian declared at the Friday press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Antonelli currently leads the drivers' championship with an 84-point advantage over Russell, a difference that widened in Malaysia after the Briton was forced to retire due to a power unit failure, his third retirement of the season. That circumstance has fueled conspiracy theories on social media, something Wolff considers ridiculous: "Do they think I have a button that says 'George's engine failure now'? Or that I harm one driver against the other when we are fighting for the constructors' championship?" he asked himself with irony.
The Mercedes director acknowledged that this type of comment is entertaining to a certain point: "Sometimes I read what they write and I find it hilarious, these people really contribute to my own entertainment when they insult the team or me. I am Satan, according to what I've heard, in general it's funny but there is really zero understanding and respect on the part of those who invent these things. They should, instead of watching Formula 1, put on Teletubbies or some Mickey Mouse show", he sentenced.
Wolff wanted to make clear that his management philosophy has always been based on equality and transparency and recalled a conversation he had with Alain Prost at the beginning of his career in Formula 1, when the Frenchman explained to him why his relationship with Ayrton Senna had broken down: "He told me: 'Because we never knew what the team was about, you felt you were the favorite at one moment and two months later you thought the politics were against you. There were situations in which you felt you really weren't wanted' so I took that as my challenge: to always maintain the balance", Wolff explained.
The Austrian also highlighted the relationship he maintains with both drivers: "We have had Kimi since he was 11 years old, he is an integral part of the team. It's very nice to see him grow to be in a position to fight for a championship at such an early age and then there is George, who has been with us since he was 17. He is someone for whom I feel many emotions and compassion, we are very close that's why it's quite annoying that some lunatics who don't understand how relationships work, invent this type of accusations" he stated.
Wolff also referred to Mercedes' decision to split the car specifications in Singapore, with Antonelli using the recent update and Russell returning to the Azerbaijan specification: "We don't know which one will be faster, so you make the decision to try to find out, there is no big political thought behind this. When it comes to competing, we have always been very clear: we don't get in each other's way" he concluded.
For Wolff, the important thing is that both Russell and Antonelli know the team's philosophy and know that they will always have the same opportunities.
