The Mercedes director acknowledges Red Bull's resurgence and warns that the title fight will be much harder in 2027.

Toto Wolff has issued a warning that captures the moment in Formula 1. The Mercedes director, far from being overconfident about his team's advantage in both championships, has acknowledged the growing threat that Red Bull represents after Max Verstappen's consecutive victories in Malaysia and Singapore: "You have to take your hat off to what Red Bull has done this season, how they have developed the car and how everything has fit together as a package, and then you put Max Verstappen in the car and when he feels that this drives as he wants, these are the results," Wolff declared after the race in Marina Bay.

The Dutchman signed off on an almost perfect weekend in Singapore, taking pole and winning both the Sprint and the Grand Prix; a week earlier in Malaysia, he had already taken his first win of the season. Red Bull has made a significant leap in quality in the last races, and Wolff is aware that this progress is not a coincidence: "He has been by far the fastest guy today and in Kuala Lumpur. We will see when our update starts to work and lands where we believe it should, if we can be competitive against him, but one thing is sure: next year is a total war between the teams, and Red Bull is part of that," the Austrian warned.

While Red Bull seems to have found the way with its latest improvements, the update introduced by Mercedes for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia turned out inconclusive; as a consequence, the team decided to make direct comparisons in Singapore, with Kimi Antonelli using the new specification and George Russell the previous version with which he won in Baku. Antonelli finished third in Marina Bay, while Russell salvaged a ninth-place finish after starting from the back of the grid due to the power unit changes. Wolff was cautious about the potential of the new pieces: "When we entered the weekend, we took the unusual measure, or let's say the unusual measure in a cutting-edge technology business, of having two different cars because we felt we needed to accelerate our learning curve, and that was good," he explained.

The Mercedes director acknowledged that the new W17 specification requires a setup philosophy very different from the previous one: "Was it an easy car today like the previous one? I don't think it was. Does it have the performance that we expected the update to bring? I still don't think so, but it was a step in the right direction, and in Austin we will see if we can continue consolidating that and if, indeed, it has more performance because it is crucial for the development direction of next year," Wolff added.
