The drivers hit the track to set the times that will create the grid for Saturday’s sprint race.
Teams are ready for what Silverstone has for them, the track being known for its unpredictability from British weather to varying track conditions.
Bring on SQ1
The first round of sprint qualifying was fairly straightforward and tight, with both drivers from Cadillac, Aston Martin, and Haas not making it through to round two.
Heartbreak for home race kid Ollie Bearman as he misses out on the second round of sprint qualifying by just 0.010 seconds, ever so slightly not enough.
Not only were the cars on track flying, but pieces of the cars as well. A piece of Lando Norris’s rear brake duct came flying off in the first round and it was confirmed by team CEO Zak Brown that the defending champion was suffering loss of downforce due to the missing piece.
A Breather in SQ2
All drivers are still on mediums; the track continues to develop throughout SQ2, bringing a bit more grip and another uncomplicated round.
A Scramble to the Finish Line in SQ3
As the session was coming to an end four drivers went to the top before pole position was secured by the home race hero, Lewis Hamilton.
The top three consists of Lewis Hamilton to start on pole, current championship leader Kimi Antonelli to join him on the front row separated by just 0.11 seconds, and four time world champion Max Verstappen in third.
Lewis Hamilton Estatic
The beloved world champion was left speechless after delivering pole in front of his home crowd, noting how special it is to top the times at home, even after winning at Silverstone nine times.
Hamilton celebrates the special weekend with more addition of yellow from the special edition yellow caps, to parts of his race wear such as his gloves and boots. It is a small nod to his heritage that has been grown throughout his entire career and the homage of being a British driver.
The driver remarked on the team’s comments coming into the weekend to the press after getting pole position that the team was worrying him hearing about expected performance compared to other cars on grid, adding even more to the excitement of pole position.
