With his Williams contract ending this year, Carlos Sainz Jr is surely sitting on his next decision. Is Sainz waiting too long, or does he know something that we don't know about?
Carlos Sainz Jr's contract with Williams Racing will end after the 2026 season. According to Sky F1 broadcaster and former racing driver Martin Brundle, Sainz might be taking his time and "considering all the options" before making a decision.
Now comes this important question: Is Sainz waiting too long again, or are there not enough openings from other teams to work with?
The 2024 waiting game
Since entering Formula 1 in 2015, Sainz has suited up for five different teams. The Spaniard has raced for Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and Williams.
Sainz has four F1 Grand Prix wins, all with Ferrari. With Sainz in his peak form in 2024, many people thought that Ferrari would extend his contract. But the team couldn't pass up the opportunity to sign Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion.
Ferrari announced the Hamilton signing in February 2024, giving Sainz enough time to talk to other teams and decide on his new 2025 seat.
Teams valued Sainz's racecraft and intelligence, and he drew strong interest from the paddock. But he took his time in analyzing his options, which reportedly included Alpine, Audi, and Williams.
In July 2024, five months after the Hamilton-Ferrari announcement, Sainz committed to racing for Williams in 2025.
Sainz's patience is wearing thin
In his first year with Williams, the team scored 137 points, placing them at the top of the midfield. They finished 5th in the Constructors' Standings, and it seemed that Sainz made the right decision to sign with Williams.
But with new regulations almost cancelling out their progress from last year, Williams hasn't been the same team in 2026. Midway through the season, the team has only accumulated 11 points.
Plus, their most recent stretch of five races has been brutal. Sainz and teammate Alex Albon have not scored a point since the Barcelona Grand Prix.
Sainz can't go through another rebuild
As he's turning 32 in September, the Spaniard can't afford to go through a rebuild. He should be racing for podiums at this stage of his career. At least that is what's ideal for him.
But is there room for Sainz in the Top 4 teams? There are rumors that a Max Verstappen exit from Red Bull could open a top-tier seat for Sainz. But the chances are bleak at most, especially with the Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren seats all booked for 2027.
Crossroads is where Sainz is. For now, extending with Williams and remaining committed to their project could be the more viable option.
