Brooks Koepka fired an 8-under 63 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson as a new Scotty Cameron putter finally flipped his season on the greens.
Brooks Koepka finally looked dangerous again at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, and the reason was sitting right in his hands.
Koepka opened Thursday at TPC Craig Ranch with a bogey-free 8-under 63, riding a red-hot Scotty Cameron Fastback 1.5 putter to the top of the early leaderboard.
For a player who has spent much of the season fighting his stroke, this felt less like a good round and more like a warning shot.
The numbers were loud. Koepka needed only 25 putts, gained more than two strokes on the greens and ranked near the top of the field in Strokes Gained: Putting during the early wave.
He poured in six birdies, added an eagle and finally paired his elite ball-striking with the one piece that’s been missing.
That’s a massive deal because Koepka’s putting has been a season-long headache.
He entered the week ranked 141st in putting, and the search for answers has turned into a full-on carousel. This is already his fourth putter of the season after experimenting with multiple Scotty Cameron and TaylorMade models.
The breakthrough didn’t come by accident. Koepka said he spent hours in his home putting studio earlier in the week, testing options until something clicked.
By Thursday morning, the new flatstick looked anything but new.
He opened the scoring with a 17-foot birdie at No. 11, then buried a 13-footer for eagle on No. 12. He made four putts from outside 10 feet and saved par at his final hole to keep the card clean.
Now comes the real question: Is this just the honeymoon phase, or has Koepka actually found something?
For one round, at least, Brooks Koepka’s putter wasn’t the problem. It was the weapon.
