Cameron Young shot 67 to reach 13 under at the Cadillac Championship, opening a five-shot lead over Nick Taylor, Alex Smalley and Jordan Spieth.
Cameron Young is halfway to a breakthrough at the Cadillac Championship, and he’s making Trump National Doral look far more forgiving than it really is.
Young followed Thursday’s bogey-free 64 with a 5-under 67 on Friday, reaching 13 under through two rounds at the PGA TOUR’s $20 million Signature Event.
That gave him a five-shot lead over Nick Taylor, Alex Smalley and Jordan Spieth, who sit tied for second.
The only real mistake on Young’s card came at the par-4 14th, where he made his first bogey of the week after a tricky chip failed to reach the green.
He didn’t let it linger. Two holes later, Young drove the par-4 16th and two-putted for birdie, his 14th of the tournament.
That’s the kind of response leaders make.
Scottie Scheffler played alongside Young and posted a clean 67, but the world No. 1 remained seven shots back at 6 under. Gary Woodland is alone in fifth at 7 under, while Scheffler is part of a group that also includes Alex Fitzpatrick.
Jordan Spieth stayed in the chase with a 71, highlighted by a rare birdie at the difficult par-4 18th. Through two rounds, only six birdies had been made on the Blue Monster’s closing hole.
Young also survived 18, despite his approach finishing near cables behind the green after bouncing off the bleachers. He took relief, chipped close and walked away with par.
The leaderboard still has danger lurking. Kurt Kitayama fired the round of the day with an 8-under 64, while Sudarshan Yellamaraju shot 66 after briefly threatening something even lower.
Still, the tournament belongs to Young entering the weekend. At Doral, though, he knows a big lead can disappear fast.
