Jordan Smith leads at 10-under, but Hideki Matsuyama, Alex Smalley and a crowded Colonial board make Round 3 wide open.
The Charles Schwab Challenge is officially a weekend knife fight.
Jordan Smith owns the 36-hole lead at Colonial Country Club after firing a second-round 65 to reach 10-under, but nobody’s running away from this thing.
Not after Jackson Suber’s late double bogey on No. 9 shoved the cut back to 2-under and dragged 75 players into the weekend.
Suddenly, 11 extra golfers got new life, and everyone still standing is within eight shots of the lead.
That’s not a leaderboard. That’s a traffic jam.
Smith knows he’s in a strong spot, but he doesn’t sound like a guy ready to cruise.
“Going into the weekend in good position,” Smith said. “The putter’s been hot the last two days, which is nice to see.
Swing still hasn’t felt a hundred percent, but we’ve been hitting a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, which is key out here.”
That last part matters. Colonial doesn’t reward chaos. It rewards players who find fairways, control approaches and roll in enough putts to survive.
Hideki Matsuyama is the current betting favorite at +720, and that makes sense with his ball-striking and major-championship nerve. But the board is loaded.
Ten players are listed under +1600 at DraftKings Sportsbook, which tells you exactly how thin the margins are.
J.J. Spaun remains dangerous at +1225, while Alex Smalley sits right beside him at +1250 and 8-under.
Smalley has gained 6.3 strokes on the field with his putter and approach play through two rounds, and his Saturday scoring average ranks 14th on TOUR.
Michael Brennan is another name to watch after gaining more than five strokes combined with driver and putter. His top-10 price at +200 will get attention.
The danger zone? Mackenzie Hughes and Akshay Bhatia.
Hughes has hit only 25 greens through two calm rounds, and gusty south winds could make Colonial’s small targets even nastier.
Bhatia has found just 23 of 36 greens and could be headed for Round 3 regression.
Smith leads, Matsuyama stalks, and Colonial is ready to punish somebody.
