Cameron Young takes a six-shot Cadillac Championship lead into Sunday at Doral, with Scottie Scheffler chasing and weather looming.
Cameron Young didn’t cruise through Saturday the way he did during the first two rounds of the Cadillac Championship, but he still left Trump National Doral with complete control of the tournament.
Young shot a 2-under 70 in the third round, moving to 15 under for the week and carrying a commanding six-shot lead into Sunday’s final round at Doral.
That cushion puts him firmly in position to chase down one of the biggest wins of his career, though the leaderboard behind him includes world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
Scheffler posted a 3-under 69 on Saturday to reach 9 under, tied with Si Woo Kim and Kristoffer Reitan. Ben Griffin, Nick Taylor and Matt McCarty sit another shot back at 8 under, but the final round still feels like Young’s tournament to lose.
The biggest wild card may be the weather. Heavy rain is expected Sunday in South Florida, prompting tournament officials to move tee times earlier.
Players will go off in threesomes from split tees, with the field scheduled to begin between 7:30 and 9:40 a.m. in an effort to beat the worst conditions.
Young has already shown he can handle major-stage pressure this year. He shared the 54-hole lead at the Masters before finishing tied for third, two shots behind Rory McIlroy.
Now he’ll try to close at Doral after building a much larger advantage.
Scheffler did give himself a small spark late Saturday. On the difficult par-4 18th, the “Blue Monster,” he hit his approach to four feet and made birdie, just the ninth birdie of the week on the closing hole.
Young answered with a steady par, preserving his six-shot lead and leaving everyone else chasing entering Sunday.
