Jackson Koivun’s pro debut headlines the John Deere Classic, where Jordan Spieth, Max Homa and rising PGA Tour stars chase FedExCup points.
Jackson Koivun’s PGA Tour career officially starts at the John Deere Classic, and yeah, this one feels like more than just another summer stop.
The former Auburn star arrives at TPC Deere Run with serious buzz and a PGA Tour card already secured.
Koivun earned his way through PGA Tour University Accelerated, then stayed at Auburn long enough to help the Tigers capture their second NCAA Championship in three years.
Now, the training wheels are gone.
Koivun isn’t walking into this week cold, either. He finished T11 at the John Deere Classic last year as an amateur, then followed it with a slick run that included T6 at the ISCO Championship, T5 at the Wyndham Championship and T4 at the Procore Championship.
Add in a T23 at the U.S. Open, and the message is pretty clear that this kid doesn’t scare easily. He also won 11 times in three seasons at Auburn.
But Koivun isn’t the only newcomer trying to steal the spotlight.
Luke Clanton, another PGA Tour University Accelerated product, is in the field. So is 19-year-old Blades Brown, who accepted Special Temporary Member status after finishing T14 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.
Brown already has four top-20 finishes this season, which is ridiculous for a teenager still learning the weekly grind.
Then there’s Jordan Spieth, the old young legend of this event.
Spieth won his first PGA Tour title here in 2013 at age 19, becoming the Tour’s first teenage winner since 1931.
He won again at TPC Deere Run in 2015, both times in playoffs. If there’s a course that can wake up vintage Spieth chaos, this is it.
Defending champion Brian Campbell returns after beating Emiliano Grillo in a playoff last year. He’ll try to become the first back-to-back winner here since Steve Stricker’s three-peat from 2009-11.
The field also has real teeth. Chris Gotterup, Ben Griffin, Jacob Bridgeman, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, J.T. Poston, Daniel Berger and past champions Davis Thompson, Lucas Glover, Michael Kim and Dylan Frittelli are all in the mix.
TPC Deere Run is a par-71 birdie factory at 7,327 yards, but it’s not defenseless. The fourth hole is nearly 40 yards longer this year after the loss of a historic tree forced changes.
With 500 FedExCup points on the line, this isn’t just Koivun’s debut. It’s the opening shot of a career everyone in golf is about to track closely.
