With the FedExCup Playoffs closing in, the John Deere Classic gives Jackson Koivun, Eric Cole, Tom Kim and others a chance to change their summer fast.
The John Deere Classic isn’t just another summer stop on the PGA TOUR schedule.
With the FedExCup Playoffs closing in and only the top 70 players advancing after the Wyndham Championship, TPC Deere Run suddenly feels like a pressure cooker.
The bigger prize is even juicier ... a spot inside the top 50, which brings Signature Event access in 2027.
That means more money, better fields and a much cleaner path to relevance. For players hovering near the line, chasing status or trying to flip a frustrating season, this week could be a launchpad.
PGATour.com offered its five players with a chance to pounce on the opportunity at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinios this week.
Jackson Koivun might be the most fascinating name in the field. The Auburn star is making his professional debut after tearing through PGA TOUR University Accelerated and already proving he can handle major championship heat with a made cut at the U.S. Open.
He’s young, fearless and walking into the John Deere Classic with real betting-board respect. That’s not normal for a first-time pro. It’s a sign that expectations are already sky-high.
Eric Cole enters with the sharper form. He nearly grabbed his first PGA TOUR win at the Charles Schwab Challenge before Russell Henley caught him late, then followed it with a top-10 at the Memorial.
He also opened hot at the Travelers before fading on Sunday. Still, three straight events with legitimate contention is hard to ignore. Cole feels overdue, and this field gives him a real shot.
Harry Higgs is the emotional wildcard. After six missed cuts, he found something at the U.S. Open and sounded like a guy who had rediscovered belief.
Higgs has never lacked talent or personality, but confidence has been the missing club in the bag. If Shinnecock Hills really unlocked him, Deere Run could be dangerous.
Carson Young is another name worth circling. He’s made five cuts in seven PGA TOUR starts this year and has been rolling on the Korn Ferry Tour with four top-10 finishes.
Even better, he’s finished tied for fifth at the John Deere Classic in each of the last two years. Some horses love certain courses. Young clearly loves this one.
Then there’s Tom Kim. After a rough 18-month stretch, his solo third at the U.S. Open felt like a flare shot.
Add in a tie for sixth at Myrtle Beach and a tie for 15th at the RBC Canadian Open, and the comeback case is building.
The John Deere Classic may not have the loudest field of the summer, but for Koivun, Cole, Higgs, Young and Kim, it could change everything.
