Jordan Spieth grabbed a share of the FedEx St. Jude lead as the top-50 bubble shifted, Rory McIlroy stumbled and Memphis turned into playoff chaos.

The FedEx St. Jude Championship wasted absolutely no time turning the FedExCup Playoffs into a pressure cooker Thursday in Memphis.

Jordan Spieth, fighting simply to keep his season alive, fired a bogey-free 5-under 65 at TPC Southwind and finished Round 1 tied for the lead with Michael Thorbjornsen, Kurt Kitayama and Jake Knapp.

For a player who arrived outside the magic top-50 cutoff, Spieth couldn't have scripted a better opening move.

His projected FedExCup position jumped dramatically, putting him temporarily inside the field for next week's BMW Championship.

And Spieth wasn't the only intriguing name making noise.

Tommy Fleetwood opened at 4 under, immediately putting himself back in contention at a course that has already provided its share of heartbreak.

Viktor Hovland joined him at 4 under, offering another reminder that when his ball-striking clicks, he's capable of beating anybody.

Then there was Rory McIlroy.

While several stars attacked Southwind, McIlroy stumbled to a 4-over 74, leaving himself with significant work to do over the final three rounds.

Scottie Scheffler wasn't nearly as sharp off the tee either, hitting only four of 14 fairways, yet still missed just one green - a pretty good illustration of how absurdly effective Scheffler can be even without his best driving.

The bigger drama, however, is happening around the top-50 cutoff.

Spieth's charge shook up the projections immediately. Michael Kim and Sungjae Im also moved into projected BMW Championship positions, while Matt McCarty, Keith Mitchell and Maverick McNealy slipped outside the top 50.

That's what makes Memphis different from an ordinary TOUR stop. One good Thursday can completely change a season. One bad afternoon can end it.

Robert MacIntyre experienced the ugly side of that equation, shooting an 82, eight shots worse than anyone else in the field.

He's safely positioned to advance, but every FedExCup point matters with only 30 players eventually reaching the TOUR Championship.

Meanwhile, rookie Jackson Koivun raced around TPC Southwind alone in just 3 hours, 6 minutes, another quirky subplot in a postseason opener already loaded with them.

Thursday offered hope. Friday starts applying the pressure.

Spieth, Fleetwood and Hovland gave golf fans plenty to dream about in Round 1, but the FedExCup Playoffs have a brutal way of separating early excitement from Sunday reality.
