The 2026 Memorial Tournament already looks like a street fight at Muirfield Village, and that’s exactly how Jack Nicklaus probably wants it.
After one round, Wyndham Clark, Tommy Fleetwood, J.J. Spaun and Ryan Gerard sit tied for the lead at 5-under, each firing a 67 on a course that played more than a stroke over par.

This isn’t a birdie-fest. It’s a survival test with water, rough, firm greens and just enough wind to make even the best players look uncomfortable.
Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, looked right at home in the chaos.
“The golf course is so demanding,” Clark said. “I think I made three saves by chipping out and having a hundred yards in.”
That’s Memorial golf in one sentence. Miss the fairway, take your medicine, then try not to bleed.
Fleetwood’s round might have been the slickest escape act of the day. He hit only seven greens in regulation but went bogey-free by getting up and down 11 times.
Spaun, fresh off a strong week at Colonial, held steady after giving shots back.
“I thought I did well between the ears today,” Spaun said. “The game’s felt really good for a while now.”
Gerard brought the heater late, making five straight birdies on the back nine. He also warned the course could turn nasty fast.
“It’s playing difficult, it’s playing firm, it’s playing fair,” Gerard said, “but if it continues like this, it could get really, really difficult by Saturday.”
Rory McIlroy survived a double bogey and opened at 1-under, saying, “There’s 69 more holes to go.”

Scottie Scheffler wasn’t as clean. The two-time defending champ shot 73 after finding water on No. 16.
Memorial odds now have Fleetwood at 6-1, Spaun at 8-1 and Scheffler still lurking at 17/2. This leaderboard is loaded, but Muirfield Village may be the real star.
