J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard share the Memorial lead at 9 under after storms halted Round 3, setting up a chaotic Sunday at Muirfield Village.

The Memorial Tournament hit the brakes Saturday, and now Muirfield Village is staring at a Sunday sprint with J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard stuck at the front.

Poston and Gerard were tied for the Memorial Tournament lead at 9 under through five holes when another wave of storms shut down Round 3 in Dublin, Ohio.

Sam Burns sat one shot back at 8 under through six holes, but the PGA TOUR called play for the day with thunderstorm activity still threatening the area.

The third round is scheduled to resume Sunday at 7 a.m. ET, followed by a final round played in threesomes off both tees.

Only 21 players completed Round 3 before the shutdown, with Harris English posting the best finished total at 3-under 213 after a 69.

The delay may have come at a strange time for Scottie Scheffler.

The world No. 1 started the day 10 shots off the lead and bogeyed his opening hole, then caught fire with a birdie-birdie-eagle burst before adding another birdie at No. 10. Suddenly, his chase for a third straight Memorial title had life.

Then Muirfield punched back. Scheffler bogeyed Nos. 12 and 14, the latter after finding water off the tee, and slipped back to 2 under for the round, eight behind the leaders.

Rory McIlroy was also eight back through 16 holes.

Rain and hail completely changed the course, softening a layout that had played fast and brutal all week. Justin Thomas, who shot 72 after making the cut on the number, knew he missed the best window.

“That’s kind of the joy of being first off because you normally get no wind and an easier course,” Thomas said. “But I missed the window. You know, you've got to play better.”

For Poston, Sunday could be massive. A win or runner-up finish may help him climb safely into the U.S. Open field.
