Phil Mickelson sought treatment earlier this year for family trauma and addiction after missing most of the 2026 golf season and all four majors.

Phil Mickelson spent time in a treatment facility earlier this year for “family trauma and addiction,” according to a statement from his representatives, adding new context to the six-time major champion’s prolonged absence from competitive golf.

Mickelson, 56, is no longer at the facility.

He played only one LIV Golf event in 2026, appearing in South Africa before stepping away from competition for what had initially been described publicly as a family health matter.

He later skipped the Masters and ultimately missed all four major championships for the first time since 1989.

His representatives confirmed Wednesday that Mickelson had voluntarily sought professional treatment.

“Phil was seeking treatment for family trauma and addiction,” a representative told TMZ Sports.

The disclosure comes after a difficult year away from the course.

Mickelson has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with gambling addiction, acknowledging in 2023 that gambling had crossed the line from recreation into addiction and damaged relationships in his personal life.

His representatives had also said earlier this year that his priority was becoming “the husband, father, and man his family deserves,” while asking for privacy surrounding family matters.

Mickelson’s absence also coincided with separate off-course controversies. Reports in June alleged that he lost his membership at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe following an accusation involving inappropriate contact with a female employee.

The club confirmed that a member had been removed but did not publicly identify Mickelson. His attorney denied wrongdoing and said any misunderstanding had been resolved.

Additional allegations were later made publicly by Ashley Perez, the ex-wife of golfer Pat Perez. Mickelson’s representatives responded at the time by emphasizing that he was focused on recovery and his family.

None of that changes Mickelson’s place in golf history.

He owns 45 PGA Tour victories and six major championships, including three Masters titles and his historic 2021 PGA Championship victory at age 50.

But 2026 has looked unlike any other season of his professional career.

Instead of chasing trophies, Mickelson has largely been away from golf and focused on issues far more personal.

For now, there is no announced timetable for his return to competition.
