Retief Goosen won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Sugarloaf, edging Stephen Ames by two points in Stableford scoring.

Retief Goosen still knows how to close at TPC Sugarloaf.

Twenty-four years after winning the PGA Tour’s BellSouth Classic on the same course, Goosen returned to the winner’s circle Sunday by taking the PGA Tour Champions’ Mitsubishi Electric Classic.

The 57-year-old South African finished with 39 points under the modified Stableford scoring format, beating Stephen Ames by two points. It marked Goosen’s fifth victory in 150 career starts on the Champions Tour.

Goosen delivered when it mattered most, birdieing the par-5 18th to finish off a 14-point final round. The format rewarded aggressive golf, with players earning eight points for an albatross, five for an eagle and two for a birdie. Bogeys cost one point, while double bogeys or worse dropped players three.

That setup fit Goosen well. He also won the PGA Tour’s 2005 International under the same scoring system, giving him another unique Stableford victory on his résumé.

Ames made a strong Sunday push with 19 points in the final round, but he came up just short. Zach Johnson, who held the second-round lead, finished third with 36 points after an eight-point final day.

Stewart Cink gave the Atlanta-area crowd plenty to cheer about. The Georgia Tech alum and local favorite posted 19 points Sunday to finish fourth at 35. Cink entered the week with momentum after winning the Senior PGA Championship, his third victory of the year.

Still, the day belonged to Goosen, who added another impressive chapter to his long career.

Different tour, same course, same result. TPC Sugarloaf clearly still suits him.
