Rory McIlroy returns to Quail Hollow as the Truist Championship brings a loaded 72-player field, big money and major-style pressure to Charlotte.
Rory McIlroy is back at Quail Hollow, and the timing couldn’t be much better.
The Truist Championship returns to Charlotte, North Carolina, this week with a 72-player field, a $3.6 million winner’s check, 700 FedExCup points and one final tune-up before next week’s PGA Championship.
For players trying to sharpen their games before a major, Quail Hollow Club won’t exactly offer a soft landing.
McIlroy enters as the clear headliner after defending his Masters title and returning to a course where he’s already won four times.
Quail Hollow has long fit his power game, and at 7,583 yards, the par-71 layout should again reward elite driving, strong iron play and serious patience.
He won’t be alone. Cameron Young arrives scorching hot with two wins and two third-place finishes in his last five starts, while Matt Fitzpatrick has won three times this season, including his last two events.
Xander Schauffele also brings strong course history, having finished second in the last two editions of this event played at Quail Hollow.
The field also includes Ludvig Åberg, Si Woo Kim, Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Adam Scott, Ben Griffin and Rickie Fowler. Fowler’s history here is notable, too, because Quail Hollow was the site of his first PGA TOUR win in 2012.
The course itself is part of the story. The closing stretch, known as The Green Mile, remains one of the toughest finishes in golf. The 18th hole averaged 4.500 strokes in 2024, making it the hardest hole on the PGA TOUR that season.
Thursday weather could bring trouble, but the weekend forecast looks calmer. That may help scoring, but Quail Hollow rarely gives away much.
With a Signature Event title, FedExCup points and PGA Championship momentum all on the line, this week should feel far bigger than a warmup.
