Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy return as captains for the 2026 Golf Channel Games, bringing fresh talent and a high-stakes rematch to Florida.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy aren't finished battling each other, and their next showdown won't look anything like a traditional PGA Tour event.
The two golf superstars will return as captains for the 2026 Optum Golf Channel Games on Dec.Darren Fichardt Stuns Zach Johnson With Eagle To Win Simmons Bank Title 16 at Trump National Golf Club Jupiter in Florida.
This time, they'll have some intriguing new teammates and another opportunity to prove which side handles pressure better when the clock starts ticking.
Scheffler enters as the defending champion after his team survived a dramatic finish in the inaugural event last December. McIlroy, meanwhile, gets another opportunity to settle the score.
And the supporting cast could make this rematch even more entertaining.
According to the reported lineups, Scheffler's four-man team will feature rising star Jackson Koivun, Chris Gotterup and Michael Brennan.
It's an interesting combination of established dominance and emerging talent, particularly with Koivun looking to make his mark alongside the world's elite.
McIlroy's squad is expected to include major champion Matt Fitzpatrick, China's Haotong Li and South Korea's Si Woo Kim.
Li would be the only returning competitor outside the two captains, giving McIlroy some valuable experience in a format that doesn't always reward conventional tournament golf.
Unlike a typical 72-hole tournament, the Golf Channel Games are built around speed, creativity and execution under pressure.
The competition features timed challenges that force players to think quickly rather than spend several minutes studying every shot.
Returning attractions include the Team Relay and 14-Club Challenge, while organizers plan to introduce additional tests designed to create unpredictable moments.
That's part of the appeal. Golf fans rarely get to watch the game's biggest names race against a clock, scramble through unusual challenges or deal with the consequences of split-second decisions.
Golf Channel executive vice president and general manager Tom Knapp previously explained the philosophy behind the event, saying the inaugural competition demonstrated that the "best players in the world love to compete."
The first edition delivered exactly the kind of finish organizers wanted. Scheffler's team captured the title after the captains faced off in a sudden-death closest-to-the-pin contest from 47 yards.
Now McIlroy gets his rematch, Scheffler gets to defend his crown, and a new generation of players gets a national television spotlight.
The Dec. 16 competition will air live in prime time on Golf Channel and USA Network, with coverage scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. ET.
For golf fans looking for something different during the offseason, this could be one of December's most entertaining events.
