Scottie Scheffler has made difficult golf look routine for much of the PGA TOUR season, and Trump National Doral is ready to test that illusion.
The world No. 1 enters the TOUR’s return to the Blue Monster course with momentum, precision and one obvious goal: turn another close call into a trophy.
Scheffler, No. 2 in the FedExCup standings, has finished runner-up in back-to-back starts at the Masters Tournament and RBC Heritage.
He also carries a remarkable streak of 29 straight top-25 finishes on TOUR, a run built on ball-striking consistency and the kind of patience Doral demands.
The Blue Monster, back on the PGA TOUR schedule for the first time since 2016, doesn’t hide much. Scheffler described it as a course where the target is usually clear, but the punishment is severe if the swing isn’t.
Long holes, water hazards, deep bunkers and shifting wind make execution the story.
That’s especially true at the par-4 18th, a 473-yard finisher that can change personalities depending on the breeze. Into the wind, Scheffler said, the fairway can feel squeezed and the approach can jump from wedge to long iron in a hurry.
Those margins have followed him lately. Scheffler noted that one plugged lie, gust of wind or unlucky bounce can turn a likely birdie into bogey, the type of two-shot swing that separates winning from finishing second.
Away from the scorecard, Scheffler also spent time picking the brain of Formula 1 standout Sergio “Checo” Pérez during the pro-am, continuing his habit of studying how elite athletes prepare.
With the PGA Championship defense ahead and a possible career Grand Slam chase at the U.S. Open, Scheffler’s bigger goals are obvious.
At Doral, though, the job is simpler: hit the shot, repeat it, and survive the Blue Monster.
