Wyndham Clark Has Crashed the PGA Player of the Year Race
Jun 25, 2026 5:13 PM

Wyndham Clark’s U.S. Open win and two-victory season have blown open the PGA Tour Player of the Year race with Scottie Scheffler chasing.

Wyndham Clark as the PGA Tour Player of the Year frontrunner? A month ago, that sounded like a bar-room argument. Now? It’s a real conversation.

Clark has two wins, a major championship, a 60 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson and a near-miss at the Memorial Tournament. In a season where Scottie Scheffler has looked brilliant but not unbeatable, Clark has kicked the door open.

That’s what makes this race so fascinating. There’s no obvious runaway candidate. Scheffler has owned this award for four straight years, but 2026 isn’t following his usual script.

He leads the PGA Tour in scoring average, Strokes Gained: Total and top-10 finishes. He’s also No. 1 in the FedExCup by a wide margin. But the résumé has one problem: only one win.

That matters.

Clark’s argument is louder, flashier and a lot more explosive. He’s the only player in this race with multiple wins and a major.

Winning the U.S. Open changes everything, especially when paired with another victory and elite recent form.

The early-season mess? It’s easier to forgive when the last month looks like a takeover.

Matt Fitzpatrick has the old-school case. Three PGA Tour wins. That’s more than anybody else in the discussion. He’s also No. 2 in the FedExCup, has won different types of events and has been consistently dangerous.

If voters reward volume and week-to-week production, Fitzpatrick is right there.

Cameron Young has the “quality over quantity” pitch. THE PLAYERS Championship is the PGA Tour’s crown jewel outside the majors, and Young added a dominant win at the Cadillac Championship.

Throw in contention at the Masters, and he’s got the kind of peak performances voters can’t ignore.

Then there’s Rory McIlroy, who has the simplest mic drop of all: he won the Masters. Not just won it - owned the biggest stage of the season and backed up the moment.

His limited schedule hurts the counting stats, but Augusta still carries monster weight.

So who’s leading?

Right now, it’s probably Scheffler on consistency, Clark on heat, Fitzpatrick on wins, Young on trophy strength and McIlroy on legacy currency.

But if Wyndham Clark keeps this heater rolling, the answer gets uncomfortable fast.

The Player of the Year race isn’t Scottie’s birthright anymore. Clark has made sure of that.
