Zach Johnson won the Kaulig Companies Championship by six strokes at Firestone, claiming his first PGA Tour Champions major and third victory of 2026 with ease.
Zach Johnson turned Firestone Country Club’s PGA TOUR Champions farewell into a personal demolition job.
Johnson captured his first senior major Sunday, closing with a 2-under 68 to finish the Kaulig Companies Championship at 15-under 265.
His six-shot victory over Boo Weekley delivered the biggest win yet of Johnson’s rookie season on the 50-and-older circuit.
It also removed nearly all suspense from Firestone’s final act.
Johnson entered Sunday holding a four-stroke advantage after scorching the famed Akron course with a third-round 63.
Back-to-back bogeys during his opening four holes briefly offered the chasing pack a reason to believe.
That hope didn’t last long.
Nobody mounted a serious charge, and Johnson eventually settled back into the steady, calculated style that has defined his career.
While other contenders waited for the leader to crack, Johnson shut the door and kept walking toward the trophy.
He even added a little theater at the end.
Johnson chipped in from approximately 20 feet on his final hole, delivering one last exclamation point before raising the trophy.
It was a fitting finish for a player who didn’t merely protect a lead Sunday. He owned the tournament.
The victory was Johnson’s third of the 2026 PGA TOUR Champions season, immediately making him one of the tour’s most dangerous players.
It also helped him trim Stewart Cink’s advantage in the Charles Schwab Cup standings and earned Johnson a spot in next year’s THE PLAYERS Championship.
That’s quite a haul for someone still navigating his first season on the senior circuit.
Johnson’s relationship with Firestone now has the ending it deserved.
His previous best result at the course came in 2017, when he finished five shots behind Hideki Matsuyama during the venue’s World Golf Championships era.
Nine years later, Johnson returned and flipped the script. This time, he was the player leaving everyone else behind.
Weekley made the biggest move Sunday, firing a 4-under 66 to finish alone in second at 9 under.
Rory Sabbatini also closed with a 66, completing a 66-66 weekend to secure third place.
Cink, Johnson’s primary rival in the season-long points race, shot 68 and finished fourth.
The result kept Cink in front, but Johnson’s major victory suddenly makes the Charles Schwab Cup chase much more interesting.
For Firestone, the tournament marked the end of another significant chapter.
Professional tournament golf has been part of the course’s identity since 1954. Firestone hosted generations of stars before becoming a PGA TOUR Champions venue after the World Golf Championships event moved to Memphis in 2019.
With Kaulig Companies ending its title sponsorship, the Champions Tour will relocate the major to Newport Beach, California, beginning next season.
That made Sunday more than just another final round. It was a goodbye to one of professional golf’s most recognizable stages.
Johnson made sure Firestone’s final champion delivered a performance worthy of the occasion.
No collapse. No late drama. No opening for the field.
Just a six-shot beatdown, a major championship and one unforgettable final walk at Firestone.
