By landing Toronto’s top prospect Arjun Nimmala, Anaheim signals a serious rebuild. This high-stakes deadline haul earned an elite grade for turning a star pitcher into future cornerstones.
The Los Angeles Angels came into the trade deadline with uncertainty on which players and how many will be moved.
With an interim GM in place, nobody had any idea what to expect in Anaheim.
Well, it began at the end of July as the Angels traded catcher Logan O’Hoppe and right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth to the Texas Rangers in a rare intra-division move, and the Angels acquired prospect Angel Arredondo.
On Monday, just hours before the 3 p.m. PST deadline, the Angels traded star pitcher Jose Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Angels received three prospects, with Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheleti, and righty Angel Rivero all coming to Anaheim.
The headliner here is Nimmala, who is the top prospect in the Toronto organization.
As of Monday morning, Nimmala was the highest-ranked prospect traded.
After the trade, ESPN's David Schoenfield had grades for the deal. The Blue Jays received a C+, but the Angels earned an A-. Yes, trading Soriano hurts, especially since he is under contract for 2027 and 2028, but the Angels got a lot of talent in this deal.
Here is some of what Schoenfield wrote about the trade.
"Considering that top 50 prospects are rarely traded at the deadline, getting Nimmala for Soriano is a nice coup for the Angels. The other two prospects are throw-ins at this time, a Double-A outfielder and a 19-year-old in rookie ball, but let's call this a win for the Angels -- something they haven't had in a long time."
Nimmala is the big piece here, and he is just 20 years old, making him one of the younger players in that level of the minor leagues. In 2025, he hit just .224 in A ball, but this season, he had a .279/.355/.451 line in Double A.
The expectation is that Nimmala sticks around at shortstop, and as Schoenfield said, the other two players are just throw-ins.
Still, the Angels landing the Blue Jays top prospect for Soriano shows the franchise might be serious about a long-awaited rebuild, and moving on from Soriano is the first step in that direction.
Nimmala was the Blue Jays' first-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, so he has had a bit of a quick rise through the farm system.
He needs to improve at the plate, although he has done just that so far in 2026, so that's a positive sign.
At the end of the day, the Angels didn't want to trade Soriano for cheap, and this is a big return just because of the talent level of Nimmala.
