During the 2026 season, the Houston Astros did struggle with consistently putting together consistent performances, and while they did win the AL West, the season ended a lot earlier than they hoped as they were swept by the Chicago White Sox in the AL Wild Card round.

With that said, there are also some key changes happening this offseason as Houston needs to find a new general manager as well as a new manager, in addition to having some extensions to consider heading into 2027.

Based on all of that, there is one question worth answering as Houston progresses through this offseason. What is a realistic goal for the Astros heading into the 2027 season?

To start, with all the changes that were mentioned, it is going to be very interesting to see when the Astros are going to be able to make the decisions when it comes to the next general manager, the new manager, and which players they will extend, because there is no doubt that the timeline on each of those moves will play a key role in how everything takes shape in spring training and when the 2027 season does begin.

All that to say, continuity is very important in professional sports, but specifically when it comes to building a roster for the future as well as having the major decision makers in place on and off the field because the people in those positions have a lot to do with how the players feel when it comes to their security on the team.

Now looking ahead to the on field product, in 2026 the pitching and in particular the bullpen was quite inconsistent and is something that has to be much better in 2027 otherwise the Astros could have similar issues so it will be interesting to see if Houston makes any moves to add to the solid pitchers they have already in Hunter Brown, Peter Lambert, and Hayden Wesneski.

Additionally, other than designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, this team was quite inconsistent from the plate which really showed itself in the postseason. So, either the Astros need to have players progress or they need to make some signings, evaluate trade options, or do a combination of both. Regardless, the hitting does need to be improved.

The final component of looking at a realistic goal for 2027 is the fact that the AL West well below the competition in other divisions as the Astros went 81-81 and won the division while if they were in any other division they would have likely missed the postseason.

With that in mind, Houston cannot rely on that happening again, and even if the AL West is not competitive, the standard for the Astros has to be higher if they want to be a true contender in the American League.

After looking at different elements of the Astros' situation heading into 2027, a realistic goal is most likely once again competing for an AL West title and ideally getting into the postseason and being more competitive so they can show progression after an early exit in 2026. However, a lot of this will have to do with what the Astros' approach is heading into the season with a new GM and a new manager, so that will be worth watching.

So, as the Astros head into 2027, I do believe that a realistic goal is once again competing for and winning an AL West title as well as being a lot more competitive when they get to the playoffs, and with that said, it will be interesting to see if Houston can make that a reality, or if the changes that will be made within the organization put the Astros in a position where 2027 is a building year, and 2028 is when the true progression will come.
