The Houston Astros have two players who could be the next players to sign a $200 million contract based on the latest projection.
The Houston Astros have some key decisions to make this offseason, which include finding their next general manager as well as their next manager, and in addition to that, there are also some extensions that may need to happen sooner rather than later.
On that note, Bleacher Report MLB analyst Joel Reutter wrote an article on Tarik Skubal and the Next 10 players to sign $200 million contracts, which essentially is a prediction when it comes to the next 10 players who could sign these extensions. On that list were two Astros players in the form of designated hitter Yordan Alvarez and shortstop Jeremy Pena.
Both Alvarez and Pena had solid campaigns in 2026 for Houston, so let's take a look at how they each performed as well as the situation for each of them when it comes to whether or not the Astros will extend them.
Starting with Alvarez, he is coming off a very impressive showing in 2026 as he clinched the batting average title with a .316 and also added 42 home runs and 106 RBIs on his chase for the Triple Crown. Based on that production, Alvarez has a great chance to win AL MVP which is more of a reason why he could be an extension candidate.
Looking at Alvarez's contract, he has two years and $53.7 million left on his six-year, $115 million extension, and as a result of that, he could be someone the Astros want to extend before he gets closer to being a free agent, and extending him now really wouldn't add too much to his cap hit.
With that said, Alvarez is a prime candidate to sign a $200 million extension based on the production he had in 2026 as well as the fact that he has two years left on his deal and that the Astros will not want to let him become a free agent if they truly want him on this roster moving forward.
Now shifting focus to Pena, Reutter notes that he is not an obvious extension candidate, but based on where the market is now for shortstops, it is possible that Pena could sign a $200 million extension. When it comes to Pena's contract situation, he is arbitration-eligible through 2027, meaning that the Astros control his contract on a year-to-year basis through 2027.
While Pena did miss time with injuries in 2026, he was solid nonetheless, as in the 112 games he played, he had 447 at-bats, and in those opportunities he recorded 124 hits, 82 runs, 56 RBIs, 22 home runs, a batting average of .277, and an OBP of .325.
When taking a look at Pena's stats in 2026, in addition to the solid play he put on display in 2025, it is clear that he has continued to progress on the plate, and he has also been a solid defender, which is very important when it comes to signing an extension.
Additionally, Reutter mentioned that Pena did switch agents as he hired Scott Boras in June of 2025, so that could help him negotiate a $200 million extension before he becomes a free agent in 2027, but if that does not work out, Pena could also be traded to another team that may be more willing to sign him to a lucrative extension.
Even though Pena is not an obvious extension candidate, his steady play and the fact that he has Boras as an agent are two reasons why he could very well earn a $200 million extension, whether that be in Houston or a different organization.
So, after looking at the situations for Alvarez and Pena, it is possible that both of them could earn $200 million extensions whether it be in Houston or elsewhere, regardless both of these situations will be interesting to monitor throughout the offseason.
