The Houston Astros have a critical offseason filled with key decisions, with the first one now being final as they have now hired Randy Flores to be the franchise's next GM, which will make a major impact on how this team is built and performs moving forward.

With the Astros making Flores their next GM, there is one key question that has to be answered for Houston. What would be a successful offseason for the Astros following the Randy Flores hire?

Based on the fact that the Flores hire is fresh it is definitely a loaded question, but there are two key things when it comes to decisions being made that have to happen and would make this offseason a success.

First, the Astros have to find their next manager and figure out who they can really trust to manage this team on the field, but that will depend on how this team is built heading into 2027, which leads into other decision that needs to be made.

The other decision that has to be made is whether or not the 2027 season is viewed as a year where Houston will rebuild and figure out who is a part of the long-term plans, or if they still want to be competitive.

For owner Jim Crane, this may not be much of a question, as he has not been known to rebuild, but instead to do whatever it takes to put his team in a position to stay competitive and get into the postseason.

As a result of that, it will be interesting to see how Crane and Flores work together and what they decide to do and once that decision is made, the direction of this team moving forward should be made clear based on who the Astros decide to let walk as well as who they want to bring back in free agency. Additionally, the Astros trading some players could provide a clear indication depending on what the compensation is.

All that to say, with lots of change happening this offseason, the Astros must find their next manager and decide the direction they want to for this team, so the direction is clear, but also because there is a lockout expected to start in early December and if Houston can make these decisions before then, they can begin making moves to put themselves in a position to maximize the offseason rather than waiting and being behind other clubs.

Once Flores is completely settled in Houston, it will be interesting to see how he and Crane work together, who they decide on as the next manager as well as the direction of the team because there is no question that this offseason as well as the 2027 season will be crucial for how the Astros move forward as a franchise.
